28 March 2007

RIYADH - Saudi King Abdullah, whose country is a close US ally, on Wednesday slammed the “illegitimate foreign occupation” of Iraq in an opening speech to the annual Arab summit in Riyadh.

“In beloved Iraq, blood is being shed among brothers in the shadow of an illegitimate foreign occupation, and ugly sectarianism threatens civil war,” Abdullah said.

He also said that Arab nations, which are planning to revive a five-year-old Middle East peace plan at the summit, would not allow any foreign force to decide the future of the region.

In the past, Saudi leaders including Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al Faisal have often criticised US policy in Iraq but have never described its presence there as “illegitimate.”

2. This is big, but it conflicts with the Dubai deal - Hallibruton moving
to Dubai is sanctioned by Saudi Arabia.

Perhaps someone can explain the change?

Of course, I'm always looking for the peace maker nation or group?

Could they, whould they show the U.S. that it's over in Iraq in a way that could save Iran?

4. Isn't Saudi a Sunni majority?
Seems to me that they've always been a bit disappointed with the Sunnis falling out of power in Iraq.

5. Yes
But I would think they want the Americans there to keep the Sunnis from being slaughtered by the Shiites. Unless they have determined that we are incapable of doing so.

9. the whole thing is batshitcrazy
We oust the Sunnis under Saddam.

We support a Shiite Govt under Maliki.

We label Shiite Iran as evil.

Sunni Saudis are our supposed allies.

Al Queda is Sunni.

:wtf:

13. Israel wants us to invade Iran.
The U.S. wants to invade Iran.
At one point Israel and Iran were congenial and did business with each other.

AND THE STRANGEST -

Picture Bush walking holding hands - on one side it's the Saudi King and on the other it is the leader of Israel. We partner with both simultaneously.

We sell weapons, including nuclear, to Iran Shiites and blame Saudi Arabia for funding and supplying the Sunnis..

17. Link?
Do you have a link for the story about the sale of nuclear weapons to Iran? I try to keep up on world events, but seem to have missed that one.

12. Is he playing the crowd or is this legit?
I can't tell if they're genuinely pissed and ready for a change or if they're appeasing their neighbors. It has to be more bad news for the bushies if this is legitimate.
