Chilly for Cheney at BYU - I am really starting to like Utah a lot
http://www.sltrib.com/ci_5537466

Brigham Young University students, faculty and alumni have launched at least two petition drives voicing their opposition to Vice President Dick Cheney speaking at the school's commencement in April.

Others plan to boycott the graduation, hold alternative ceremonies off campus, or publicly protest the vice president's speech, said Warner Woodworth, an organizational behavior professor who is helping with a petition drive on campus.

That effort and a separate online petition drive seek to force BYU to rescind Cheney's invitation or allow someone with an opposing view to have the same schoolwide audience.

BYU spokeswoman Carrie Jenkins confirmed Tuesday that at least one group has filed paperwork with the administration asking for permission to circulate a petition about Cheney's speech.

"The university has five days to respond to their request," Jenkins said.

Meanwhile, others on campus still are considering which kinds of actions to take.

1. As an alumnus, that's pretty heartening.
I remember people being shocked at my very moderate democratic leanings.

That was also the first time I encountered the whole "Look when rush says something offensive he's joking, but there's a grain of truth in it" line of reasoning.

2. I was shocked, shocked I tell ya to read this in my paper this am
last week they ran a poll showing Mormon support for the war dropped from 70% in January 2006 to 44% today.

Shocked. This is such the land of sheep, they don't do much of anything without the churcht telling them to. Even if only a few protest, the fact that the protest is allowed is shocking.

(BYU is just don't the street from the college that invited Michael Moore to speak. There was tons of backlash if you recall with the college losing some private funding. The test for these BYU protesting students will be how will the "community" react. So far, no one is coming out to defend Cheney.)

7. If they allow them to protest on campus, that will be something..
I don't think they will, it's a very authoritarian school. Still, that some are actually standing up and voicing a contrary opinion is indeed shocking.

9. And the mayor is an outspoken liberal Democrat.
Mormons are not the robots people think they are. I grew up with many of them. Very clean, very devoted to the church, but to a one very able to think for themselves and even question church doctrine.

10. I misread your Subject as "Chilie for Cheney"
And thought they were cooking up some big bowls. Maybe as a fund raiser with a heart attack theme. Too much Comedy Central tonight.
