News: Patrick Leahy and John Conyers Demands All "Non-Internal" WH Docs
by MediaFreeze
Wed Mar 28, 2007

Leahy and John Conyerss sent a letter to Fred Fielding http://judiciary.house.gov/Media/PDFS/Fielding070328.pdf requesting that the White House turn over all documents other than the "internal" documents that they are withholding based on their claim of executive privilege.

We urge you to provide all relevant documents without delay. The White House documents to and from the Deptartment of Justice and with third parties, such as Republican state party officials, should be provided to us without delay. You have acknowledged your willingness to provide those to us previously.

That would narrow our dispute over White House documents to those you refer to as "internal". We believe that these are important to our investigation as well. For example, if there is a memorandum or an email from Karl Rove to Harriet Miers initiating consideration of firing some United States attorneys in order to impede an investigation, that would be important to know.

Very crafty. I wonder if they know something...

They are also onto GWB43.com:

In this matter we have already received a document showing communications between D. Kyle Sampson, the Attorney General's former chief of staff, and J. Scott Jennings..., in which Mr. Jennings does not use his White House e-mail account but an e-mail account at the Republican National Committee designated "gwb43.com." There is another, similar use of a nongovernmental e-mail account in an exchange including Mr. Jennings and Monica Goodling, the Justice Department official...who recently invoked her privilege against self incrimination.

Accordingly, we trust that you will be collecting and producing e-mails and documents from all email accounts, addresses and domains and that you are not artificially limiting your production to the official White House email and document retention system.

Yikes!

11. That's exactly what I picked up on. I also note
that Henry is a pretty careful writer. Note that he writes "if there is a memorandum...," not "if there were a memorandum" as would be grammatically indicated in a hypothetical construction, thereby strongly implying he definitely knows of its existence.

28. I disagree.
The subjunctive would imply irrealis, i.e., counter to fact: "If there were" implies the speaker believes there isn't one. I find the indicative to be more neutral.

"If there is such a letter, I want to know it" is fine. "If there were such a letter, I would want to know it" is fine. "If there is such a letter, I would want to know it" strikes me as slightly odd, trying to find the space between the previous two options--if such a letter exists, why say he 'would' want to know about it, as opposed to just saying he wants to know about it? "If there were such a letter, I want to know it" strikes me as odder and strikes me as internally incoherent, seeking a semantic space that doesn't exist.

I take it that Waxman doesn't have the subjunctive in his dialect. Most Americans don't. My little backwater of Maryland did. ("It's important that the letter be sent" and "It's important that the letter is sent" aren't in the least synonymous, although the latter is frequently used for the former. My little mixed dialect may routinely say "has went" and have r-ful pronunciations of 'water' and 'wash', but it kept the subjunctive remarkably well, just as it kept the 'cot' ~ 'caught' distinction. Then again, I'm a big supporter of the increasingly dropped Q-raising, so I'm practically medieval.)

15. Waxman point to email from Neil Volz, (Bob Ney's Chief of staff) + Abramoff
Waxman also pointed to three e-mails exchanged between White House officials and convicted former lobbyist Jack Abramoff, as well as a fourth e-mail from Neil Volz, the former Chief of Staff to Rep. Bob Ney. Both Volz and Ney were convicted of crimes related to their activities with Abramoff.

http://rawstory.com/news/2007/Waxman_to_Republican_groups_Save_those_0326.html

the email has to do with suggesting a Native American Chief, client of Abramoff for a Medal of Freedom, but my guess there is more. Volz worked for Ney who was Chair of the House Administration Committee when HAVA was written. Abramoff lobbied Ney for Diebold. My guess is somehow this all has ties w Diebold, but I'm not sure. I couldn't connect any dots. Hopefully they will save the emails of the gwb43.com server and not destroy them, but it seems likely they will disappear.

33. Here's the beauty of it all
They are ASKING the White House to INCRIMINATE THEMSELVES, and they WILL, they have no choice.. they've BROKEN the LAW on this one, and I think that's why Leahy is drooling, gnashing at the bit..

These acts are against the Presidential Records Act as far as I understand, and that IS ILLEGAL.

I can't wait to see them start SLAPPING these assholes around, showing them emails they KNOW exist and asking for comment.

Hopefully Rove will be sounding like Porky Pig, since he looks like him, and it will end up with a "Tha Tha Tha That's ALL FOLKS!" from Pigboy as he's JAILED.. :)

35. Is this why War w/Iran is being ramped-up?
Bushco will just create another war where none has to be, to halt the Dems from poking their noses too close to his illegal criminal actions.
Creating a War for Profit
Cronyism
Rigging the election system to place Bush in position for the biggest personal money-grab in history.
etc.
etc.

36. You're probably on to something there
although I think at least with Iran, the whole thing is played out. There is only one time the war card can really be played and he did it with Afghanistan. He botched it but got away with it but when he tried it with Iraq, we all know what happened there.

So you gotta figure that the Iraq war made great cover for scandals (like this one and funneling 40% of the national budget to private contractors) but of course it couldn't last long. Invading Iran is too obvious for the reason you mention-though lets face it-Bush's sanity isn't strong enough to keep it from happening.

Seriously. It appears a crime may have been committed using RNC computers.

The RNC is probably erasing everything as fast as they can now. The FBI should seize the RNC's computers now.
