Dobson: If you're not evangelical, then you're not a Christian
http://www.usnews.com/usnews/news/articles/070328/28dobson.htm

At least that's what I came away with from reading this.

<snip>
"Everyone knows he's conservative and has come out strongly for the things that the pro-family movement stands for," Dobson said of Thompson. " I don't think he's a Christian; at least that's my impression," Dobson added, saying that such an impression would make it difficult for Thompson to connect with the Republican Party's conservative Christian base and win the GOP nomination.

Mark Corallo, a spokesman for Thompson, took issue with Dobson's characterization of the former Tennessee senator. "Thompson is indeed a Christian," he said. "He was baptized into the Church of Christ."

In a follow-up phone conversation, Focus on the Family spokesman Gary Schneeberger stood by Dobson's claim. He said that, while Dobson didn't believe Thompson to be a member of a non-Christian faith, Dobson nevertheless "has never known Thompson to be a committed Christian—someone who talks openly about his faith."

"We use that word—Christian—to refer to people who are evangelical Christians," Schneeberger added. "Dr. Dobson wasn't expressing a personal opinion about his reaction to a Thompson candidacy; he was trying to 'read the tea leaves' about such a possibility."

<snip>

Quite frankly, ANYONE that Dobson would endorse is somebody that I do not want anywhere near the reins of power.

5. And the Orthodox Christians think nobody
whose church was founded after 700A.D. is legitimate.

But hey, if they want to believe the earth is only 6K years old and the dinosaurs used to chase cavemen around, at least we can tell who to watch closely.

13. It is rather interesting why he decides this is such a big deal
IMHO, it's quite obvious that these types of people want to establish some sort of theocracy governed by fundamentalist moral rules.

What's really ironic is that while fundamentalist Christians share a lot in common with their extremist Muslim brethren, they're quite xenophobic towards them. Hmmm - maybe it's a good thing they're opposed to each other, we probably wouldn't want them joining forces. :sarcasm:

34. You're right. Only God knows who is 'real' and who isn't.
I do have a problem though with any branch of Christianity that says it has a lock on the truth and their way is the only way to God. I think elements of truth can be found in any religion.

23. When I first heard that from an evangelical acquaintance, my hair raised.
And that's why she's now an acquaintance and no longer a friend. Even though I'm an Atheist, the sheer bigotry of that statement stunned me.

Here's some more: http://youtube.com/watch?v=uk2ZHVJBAsg

And an impromptu transcript:

Announcer: "Pastor of Universal Church causes controversy and indignation throughout the country. He assaulted an image of Our Lady of Aparecida during a religious show broadcast by the Record TV station yesterday in São Paulo."

Commentator, overriding Preacher: "In the day dedicated to Brazil's patron saint, Pastor Sergio Von Helde of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God decided to protest against the Catholic holiday. During the show 'The Awakening of Faith' he hosts at Record TV, he used an image of Our Lady of Aparecida to accuse the Catholic Church of profiting from the worship of saints. On camera, he reinforced his point with aggressive gestures."

Preacher: "We are showing people that this thing here... look, look... this doesn't work! This is no saint! This is no God! This costs 500 Reais (about US$ 400 at the time) at the stores, my friend, five months of minimum wage! And there are people who buy it! Now, if you want a cheaper saint, they have it as low as R$ 100. (cut) Could God the Creator of the Universe be compared to such an ugly doll?"

31. It's starting
First they say a person is not a Christian if they are not evangelical. Next they won't be Christian unless they belong to a specific evangelical denomination. Then it will be they are a Christian only if they attend a particular church in that denomination. I've seen this before--I had cousins who literally thought that the only people going to heaven were the members of their little country church.

35. Emp Phillips
I was walking across a bridge one day, and I saw a man standing on the edge, about to jump off. So I ran over and said "Stop! don't do it!" "Why shouldn't I?" he said. I said, "Well, there's so much to live for!" He said, "Like what?" I said, "Well...are you religious or atheist?" He said, "Religious." I said, "Me too! Are you christian or buddhist?" He said, "Christian." I said, "Me too! Are you catholic or protestant?" He said, "Protestant." I said, "Me too! Are you episcopalian or baptist?" He said, "Baptist!" I said,"Wow! Me too! Are you baptist church of god or baptist church of the lord?" He said, "Baptist church of god!" I said, "Me too! Are you original baptist church of god, or are you reformed baptist church of god?" He said,"Reformed Baptist church of god!" I said, "Me too! Are you reformed baptist church of god, reformation of 1879, or reformed baptist church of god, reformation of 1915?" He said, "Reformed baptist church of god, reformation of 1915!" I said, "Die, heretic scum", and pushed him off. -- Emo Phillips

Christians, Catholics, and Jews." Mom heard Marion (his real name) say that on-air years ago. Clearly Dobson is cut from the same cloth.

Never mind the exclusion of Muslims, Buddhists, Wiccans, etc., etc., since when are Catholics not Christians?! :grr:
