SciFi Channel changing name to SyFy
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29726865/

SciFi has been turning into the wresting paranormal channel for awhile now so they might as well change the name.

TVLand also might as well change it name to Pathetic Reality Garbage Channel

3. That opens up the name SciFi for the History channel to use now.
Since they are off in woo-woo land half the time anyway.

TV is just mindnumbingly bad these days.

32. Yeah, That Grinds My Gears, Too
Bible Code stuff, Mayan Doomsday stuff, . . .

How the heck is that history, when the "predictions" haven't happened yet?

(Well, in the case of the Bible Code, they haven't actually predicted anything, so maybe that is history. The history of making things up after the fact.)

5. Wow, what a dumb move. What is "SyFy?"
Edited on Mon Mar-16-09 09:03 PM by Naturyl
It's meaningless and doesn't even accomplish the intended purpose of distancing themselves from their previous image. "SyFy" is still pronounced "SciFi," no?

I smell marketing "genius" at work. As Bill Hicks observed, they are some of the most useless people on Earth.

Now they're coming out with Cougar next month. 40-something year old woman choosing from younger men. Kinda like The Cougar Bachelorette.

14. NatGeo, History, TVLand, Discovery...they have all gone to shit.
Shows about tree loggers and ice road truckers on the History Channel? Give me a friggin' break!

A&E sucks too.

And Most Haunted on the Travel Channel is a joke. It's only watchable for the laughs you'll have every time they scream because someone off camera pushed a door closed or made a sound, and then act like it was a ghost.

16. I'm killing the cable
as soon as my DTV converter coupons come in, we'll have three available PBS channels from broadcast stations. The basic 20 channel cable package that I've been living with for nearly the last two years has provided about all I used to get from Discovery, History, Learning, and A&E channels when I was in the Northwest. And the twenty bucks a month will buy two six-packs of great craft brewed beer!

By the way, did the geek brains at SciFi Channel ever figure that people might pronounce SyFy as "siffy"? Sounds like a sexually transmitted disease...

18. With all of the classic science fiction films in the archives... scifi
gives us the most pathetic excuse for intelligent entertainment that can be rounded up. Scifi is one of the more disturbing disappointments that I have experienced in the past few years.

24. The reason behind the name change (it's really pretty rational)
NBC/Universal (parent company of SFC) plans to export SciFi Channel to international markets. One problem, they can't copyright the SciFi name in many of these markets. Hence the name change, they can't copyright "SciFi", but they can copyright "SyFy".

30. I'd buy that if they weren't shoving wrestling or reality TV shows onto the lineup
Part of the reason they're eliminating the "sci fi" part of the name is so that they can (supposedly) get away with showing anything else. When one of the justifications for the name change talks about actively getting away from the connotations of science fiction, you gotta figure they're just trying to make the whole channel something else.

begging to be included. The fantasy fans and writers weren't quite willing although they begrudgingly allowed them in. Doesn't this extend both ways?

Sci-Fi can't be trademarked and profited on. Syfy, however, can be.

31. Sci Fi Channel has degenerated
The Science Fiction CHannel has been on its way down for a long time.
Science Fiction lovers such as myself are kind of partial to aliens, space ships,
and a host of other curiosities.
When I first encountered the sci fi channel there were the classic series and films.
That's my meat and drink. They're gone now.
There are bright spots. Battlestar Galactica and Doctor WHo are good.
Although they butcher out several minutes of each Who episode.
And some of their original movies are worth seeing.
But the channel has devolved.
THe cool stuff is gone.( My favorite was the Traci Lordes wheel bumper.)
And the crap is in. I'll start with the worst: ECW wrestling.
WTF? It didn't even have a sci fi theme.
Nerds like me don't enjoy the Steroid Club for Men.
Professional wrestling is something that belongs on the other channels.
They tried running Law and Order special victims unit. Really.
And they've gone completely over the top with the animated banners.
Sci Fi was among the last to plaster ugly advertising over the entertainment.
But they're learning fast. 1/8 screen of animated distraction so far.
So it won't be long until the only sci fi channel in my house is on my old
treasured time shift recordings.

Edited on Tue Mar-17-09 05:57 AM by Fumesucker
That's how a lot of us old SF fen think of "Sci-Fi"..

http://stilyagi.org/fanspeak.html

skiffy
Derogatory term for bad sci-fi movies, or the term sci-fi itself.

Edited due to early morning caffeine deficit disorder.
