4. TV numbers are complicated
Arbitron releases alot of data that the public rarely sees. It's not just these numbers, but various ones important to advertisers. One that says alot about the whole "competition" amongst these networks is something called the "cumulative" or the "Cume". Basically it is this. That 3 million watching O'Reilly, it's the same 3 million watching Beck, and Hannity and all the rest. You've got folks watching hour after hour of the same program. Alternately CNN tends to get a DIFFERENT million watching King as compared to say Grace. So CNN has more TOTAL viewers in an evening, where as FOX has the same 3 million hour after hour. To advertisers, that's important because you don't really want to pay to keep showing the same commercial over and over to the same 3 million folks. And you see evidence of this on certain "special" nights, like elections and major incidents. CNN frequently gets huge numbers, because all the people who tune into CNN at any time, tune in at the same time. FOX on the other hand only gets that same 3 million so to speak.

There are more breakdowns as well based on age and income and it has always been known that advertisers prefer CNN's demographics to FOX's. But politically, it's also significant since the audience for FOX tends to be that "white, male, old" demographic that advertisers only have a certain interest (certain products love 'em). Politically, it is that very same problem that Mr. Steele is supposed to be addressing, a party quickly becoming dimisished because they are effectively dying off and not adding new members. The GOP is politically going (once again) the direction of the John Birch Society.
