Letter to the editor:
Government getting even bigger under Obama
To the editor:
Excuse me, but Republican policies did not cause this mess (As I See It, March 4, "Waiting for GOP to say YES"). The reality is that during most of the Bush presidency, the economy grew, there were more jobs and most importantly, I think, we were kept safe from another terrorist attack. In Bill Chatigny's study of the past, have you not noticed that all through history, the bigger that the government gets, the worse the economy?
The government's role was already too big, but President Obama has increased its size and control by at least a third. And now even some liberals are waking up to say "no" to Obama's spendthrift mentality and anyone with even half a brain knows that we did not go to Iraq so Cheney could get the oil and multimillion contracts for Halliburton.
Eventually Obama's plan may cause a jump in the economy, but it will be short-lived. The bill that he said had "no earmarks" was chock-full of earmarks. Now, I know that one person's earmark is another person's very important special project, but at this time? How about $819,000 for catfish gene mapping, then thousands for the eradication of grasshoppers, and yet thousands more for the study of fruit flies — get real!
Then President Obama has the audacity to come out and declare that the cost of health care is causing some to go into bankruptcy every 30 seconds. Statistics just do not agree with the president. Know anyone from England? Ask the Brits what they think of nationalized health care.
As I said, the role of government is already too large. When Obama was campaigning, he said he was for smaller government and for cutting taxes. Well, where is that "change" that he promised? That promise that got him elected.
