1. Thanks for the news! Space on, Trekkers! (Trek on, Spacers?)
We were meant to visit and inhabit the stars--if we can only get our act together on Planet Earth! It's waiting "out there"--the WHOLE FRIGGIN UNBELIEVABLY IMMENSE UNIVERSE OF BILLIONS AND BILLIONS AND BILLIONS OF STARS IN OUR GALAXY ALONE, AND BILLIONS AND BILLIONS AND BILLIONS OF OTHER GALAXIES!

Do you realize that we've only known this for about 50 years, that BILLIONS AND BILLIONS AND BILLIONS of other galaxies exist?

Whenever I get bogged down in the details of living on Earth--and these days it's a pretty hairy endeavor for all of us--I think of THAT. I am blessed to live in a place that doesn't suffer light pollution, and where you CAN SEE IT. Ah, it's so beautiful. And that ain't the half of it. Try this. Galaxy Zoo has a project, called Galaxy Zoo-2, where they've invited anybody (no experience needed) to classify galaxies (as spiral, oval, disturbed, etc.) from a raft of photos of distant galaxies that computers cannot analyze. They need human eyes on these photos. Instructions are provided, and there is plenty of help (examples, etc.) at the web site. Go there, and lend your eyes to the project for a while, any time you feel depressed, oppressed, voiceless, in despair. It's a great perspective-builder. www.galaxyzoo.org. Check it out.
