Norton's quite a pain to remove
long story but main machine is at the shop, so the old one needs to be used

So there is no way I will be using this for more than a couople weeks, buying a licence was stupid

There are days I hate our wonders of the universe and their magic devices... but removing Nortons is all but a joy to do

Just usual IT gripe

Now AVG free for a couple of weeks, that's the ticket

17. That's what I use
It'll remove something even if there's no "uninstall" file. THEN, it points you to all the registry keys that progam used.

It's saved me a few times.

I've been using it for about 8 years.

But I thought you were talking about antique motorcycles there for a second.

by the way, when you have a gamer in the house Zone is not a good thing... it does not play well with multiple online games

24. I get free McAfee with Comcast,
and it's been really great. Smooth, catches everything, and the machine hums.

I had some Norton stuff on this desktop, and it was screwing me up. I had to uninstall it all, and then everything was fine.

It's really a very subjective choice, yeah.

33. No apology necessary. I thought it was probably
'Combo.' Thanks for clarifying.

Any recommendation on which forum to post my report results for best advice? I found the info about ComboFix on bleepingcomputer.com, but is there a better place to get help?

I am trying to get to the bottom of why my computer is SOOOO slow and I have run through all the usual suspects, so this sounded like a good one to try next.

Hope you don't mind me picking your brain. I'm at my wits end with this 'bleeping computer'!

34. I can't give you advice on a forum.
I adopted a horribly infected computer and got it going by doing some basic house cleaning. But the Norton pop-ups would not go away. I ran SAS (super anti-spyware) and Combofix to get things going.

I know a lot of strange Norton stuff showed up in logs before I got everything cleaned up. I also recall that there is software out there that is designed to remove Norton. Using the software removal tool in Windows apparently does not work.

It seems that I had a virus which was activated whenever a Norton application was activated (among other things). That might not be right, but that's how it seemed.

I'm a hacker, not an expert.

:hi:

So even if you don't post a log to a forum, you might get some stuff cleaned up.

7. Mac and you are using Norton's?
OS 10 is almost immune to viruses, but one reason.. the performance hit you get when running it

The other is... Norton's is not the preferred tool any more (for the paid services that is Karpensky, and that will change by the way), for the free tools. AVG free, which I believe they also put out for Mac...

I have a free tool on my mac that I bother running once a month

13. Norton Internet Security 2009 is very fast and so far trouble free.
Very good service.

I have it on both computers, XP and Vista.

Updates continuously. Much better than 360, better than NIE 2008.

Norton interactive chat help with 360 and NIE has been fast and complete, with their techs even calling me back if needed. Phone and chat work together.

I had Norton on this machine until they stopped sending the free updates. I got rid of it to use what I received with my DSL provider (now McAfee Security Suite), which updates every morning. I have no complaints about the McAfee.

27. I use Avast's free home version.
It has been as good if not better than Norton. I also supplement with Search and Destroy and Malwarebytes.

I've seen specialized Norton removal tools on majorgeeks.com. You might want to check there. They also have a forum where you can ask questions. They've been very helpful to me.

If you are familiar enough with your registry and start up, I recommend 'Re-animator'. It has removed a couple of trojans that I couldn't get my other programs to either dectect or remove.

29. Norton has a removal tool you can download that is
supposed to delete all traces of norton from your system.

Try this AFTER running the Norton uninstalls.

Microsoft also has a tool for installation cleanup that you can use after that.

THEN try the Norton removal tool from their website. (SYMCLEAN?)

THEN you can delete any Norton or symantec directories and files on your system and THEN try running CCleaner to remove any other left over registry entries.

After that if you aren't satisfied you can run regedt32 and remove Norton and Symantec registry entries manually if you want.

31. You may need the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Tool
Even CCleaner may not remove the leftover reference in the MS installer.

Download msicuu2.exe from Microsoft's site, install it and it will allow you to clear the references to software that may not have uninstalled "completely".

45. Try Avast, they have a free home version that works very well!
It comes with an on-access scanner that actively scans whatever content that loads on the pc when your browsing web pages, and it blocks anything thats a virus, malware or spyware. When it does find something, it lets you know and tells you exactly what it is.

I use AVG free in conjunction with a few other things and I have yet to have a problem. I hate bloatware and uninstallable nonsense. I'll never use Norton again. For me, it was a royal drag. Maybe others find it useful but that hasn't been my experience...

Good luck!
