War Protest Music Redux.....
Edited on Fri Mar-20-09 09:40 AM by marmar
..... I've heard more than a few people, particularly Baby Boomers, say that musicians nowadays don't make protest music of the same quality that they did in the 1960s, and that might very well be true. (I'm a Gen-Xer, so admittedly I don't have a great deal of expertise on '60s protest songs).
But I was watching "Body of War," the Phil Donahue-produced documentary about injured Iraq soldier Tomas Young, again last night and paid more attention to the music this time. And I gotta say, Eddie Vedder's songs for that film are just as good as any of the standard-bearers from the 1960s that I've heard.
Just my 2¢.

1. As good as Phil Ochs?
I haven't heard Eddie's songs for the film yet, but his update of Phil's "Here's to the State of Richard Nixon" was pretty dull.

2. Have a look at Neil Young's web site...
...for the "Living With War Today" Songs of the Times:
http://www.neilyoung.com/lwwtoday/lwwsongspage.html

My band is at number 28 this week with our tune "Hello Baghdad," out of almost 3100 anti-war, and other protest and topical songs by many different artists.

There have been tons of new songs written over the last number of years, it is just very difficult for the average indie artist to get them played by the MSM radio outlets.

3. Hmmm
I liked Son of a Bush - Chuck D with Asian Dub Foundation. And He Lied about Death by the Stars - although I suppose both are more anti Bush songs than anti War songs.
