Arizona Widens Lead in # Women Governors-Mofford, Hull, Napolitano, Brewer

Women more than 50% of population--but not well represented in governorships.

There have only been 31 women governors of states-ever.

There are currently only 8 women governors- four Democratic and four Republican

<http://ncsl.typepad.com/the_thicket/2009/02/how-many-women-governors-update.html>

In 2009 there are eight women serving as governors (compared to nine in 2008). The new ones are Gov. Beverly Perdue .......in North Carolina and Gov. Jan Brewer ......... in Arizona. Continuing are Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, Connecticut Gov. Jodi Rell, Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

27 states have never had a woman governor.

When Napolitano became head Homeland Security, she was replaced by Republican Jan Brewer who must run in 2010 if she wants to continue-----is there a Democratic woman candidate to run against her?

1. I think Elaine Scruggs, mayor of Glendale AZ, would be a good choice.
She's non-partisan but has done a good job with the city of Glendale, the fourth largest city in AZ.
I wonder if she could be talked into becoming a Democrat to challenge Brewer?

2. As much as I support women
in public office especially as high up as Governor, as a resident of AZ I would rather see ANYONE who can beat Brewer running against her.
