Former Custer County Sheriff Gets 79 Years
Jury Had Recommended 94 Years For Mike Burgess

FAIRVIEW, Okla. -- A judge has sentenced a former sheriff to 79 years in prison for sexually abusing female inmates and drug court defendants.


Former Custer County Sheriff Mike Burgess was sentenced Tuesday on felony charges that included five counts of second-degree rape. The jury that convicted him had recommended he serve 94 years in prison.

Burgess was accused of using his power over female inmates and drug court defendants to force them into having sex with him, an allegation that first surfaced in a lawsuit against Burgess filed in U.S. District Court in Oklahoma City in October 2007.
