He said it was thoughtless and inconsiderate to "make fun of handicapped people".

And just to set the record straight ....

<----- It was THIS Rush Limbaugh.

2. I read that
Elisabeth Hasslebeck of The View was harping on the joke yesterday, and when the other hosts said that at least Obama has apologized, she DUMPED water from a glass of water she had on the FLOOR and squealed "OH, I DROPPED SOME WATER! I'm SORRY. TOO BAD IT'S ALREADY ON THE FLOOR!"

The media is currently running wild with the rare opportunity to confront President Obama on his poor choice of words during last week's appearance on Jay Leno. But is this a typical case of wording that demonstrates underlying bias? We often report on stories of discriminatory language in the WhAM! because language is important to our community and the advancement of our civil rights.

Is it possible that the outrage being expressed by the media and the larger public is a manufactured outrage, put forth not by people with disabilities ourselves, but instead by able bodied people who assume our voices?

During the interview, Obama does not state that his poor bowling score is "like the Special Olympics," as the media keeps insisting. Obama's remark was that Leno's sarcastic comment, "That's very good, Mr. President..." was like the Special Olympics.

His remark demonstrated that he understood that he was being treated as "special" because of his position; when in reality he should be held to the same standards applied to society as a whole. Isn't that what we all want? We fight in this movement to prove the worth of people with disabilities and demonstrate that the contributions we make to society are valuable. When we are treated as "special" we are invariably segregated and marginalized, and the opportunity to contribute to our communities is marginalized as well.
