Texas: From saved to doomed in just 6 hours!

Well, that was fast.

Texas Board of Education creationist Barbara Cargill today proposed an amendment to the science standards saying that teachers have to tell their students there are different estimates for the age of the Universe. This is not even a veiled attempt to attack the Big Bang model of the Universe, which clearly, and through multiple lines of evidence, indicates the Universe is 13.7 +/- 0.12 billion years old.

So Ms. Cargill is right, if she means that "different estimates" range from 13.58 to 13.82 (given one standard deviation) billion years old.

But she doesn’t mean that at all, does she? If you read her website, you’ll see she’s an out-and-out creationist. She has a large number of, um, factual errors on her site that are clearly right out of the Creationist Obscurational Handbook.

Anyway, her antiscience amendment passed 11 - 3.

(Actually, the author meant one standard error, not one standard deviation.)

1. One thing you (almost) have to admire about fundies is that they're persistent

Would that our Democratic representatives had a bit more of that particular quality.

2. I thought the anti-evolutionists DID believe in the Big Bang,
as in "God Spoke and BANG! It Happened!"

6. Yeah, I mean that whole "let there be light" thing just smacks of the Big Bang,
doesn't it?

I completely believe in science and evolution and astrophysics and quantum physics and ALL THAT. But I see no reason why a supreme creator could not be behind every last bit of it. I just don't think we have any way to know for sure, and we have far bigger fish to fry than to fret about it anyway.

5. What would a real godly person say? "The world is as old as it is."
Why such an enigmatic answer? Recall the story of Moses and the burning bush.

When Moses sees the burning bush, Moses questions the identity of the speaker. The reply? "I am that I am." Which is the translation of the actual word Jehovah. An enigmatic answer, yet maybe an existential answer. At that time, Moses and the Israelites know who he is.

The point? Why do religious people involve themselves in the question of the age of the known universe? Does the age prove the existance of the universe or the existance of God? In a religiuos sense, is it not enough to know that it exists? Or is there a deeper agenda? An agenda that involves politics rather than devotion to God?
