DALLAS (AP) — A Dallas police officer who drew his gun after pulling over an NFL player rushing to see his dying mother-in-law apologized Friday for his actions.
The statement from Officer Robert Powell was released through his attorneys and referred to his traffic stop last week of Houston Texans running back Ryan Moats.

"I wish to publicly and sincerely apologize to the Moats family, my colleagues in the Dallas Police Department, and to all those who have been rightfully angered by my actions on March 18, 2009. After stopping Mr. Moats' vehicle, I showed poor judgment and insensitivity to Mr. Moats and his family by my words and actions," Powell's statement reads.

In the statement, Powell said he's attempted to reach Moats but has been unsuccessful.

"Again, I am very sorry for what I did and ask for the forgiveness of all those touched by these unfortunate events," Powell said.

3. Put the gun away, put the badge away
and apology accepted. Maybe he can find a better line of work where he can take out his aggressions, like chopping weeds.

17. It wasn't ONLY the player
The woman's father was detained outside by this pig. I know it's politically incorrect to call cops pigs, but sometimes there's no other choice.

He should never be a public servant again. Take away the badge. Take away the gun.

12. I completely disagree
I've SEEN the advantage I get by being white. Let there be no illusions about that.

18. I have my doubts about that.
Just going by how "brown" people get treated by the cops HERE, in "diverse" New Mexico.

6. I heard this guy speak in the video. I doubt he wrote this. He did not use proper English when
speaking, I doubt he could have written even that statement.

10. Officer Powell's attorney
wrote a very nice note.

The police chief stated that after being shown the tape of the incident, Officer Powell defended his actions and was not able to see that he had done anything wrong.

There was an excellent article in the Dallas Morning News earlier (I am sorry I can't find the link) in which the writer discussed how Powell was purposely and cruelly delaying Mr. Moats from going into the hospital while he "showed him who was boss". The article articulated my own thoughts.

Officer Powell is now fearful of losing his job and destroying his chance of a career in law enforcement. On the night of the incident, he was on an ugly power trip showing the black man who was boss. Mr. Moats and his father-in-law demonstrated great restraint and poise throughout the entire encounter.

You really need to see the entire tape from beginning to end to appreciate the gravity of Officer Powell's behavior. At the end, he admits lying on a report he wrote involving a car chase so that the chase would be justified. The department, in my opinion, has no choice but to fire him.

11. If it wasn't a Pro Football player stopped
I wonder if Officer Powell would have given two shits about it.

That black face the nice officer pulled his weapon on turned into someone that the media would stick up for.

Would he be so contrite if not for all the publicity?

I doubt it.
