Sen. Byron Dorgan (prophet), upon repeal of Glass-Steagall in 1999 :

“I think we will look back in 10 years' time and say we should not have done this but we did because we forgot the lessons of the past, and that that which is true in the 1930's is true in 2010. I wasn't around during the 1930's or the debate over Glass-Steagall. But I was here in the early 1980's when it was decided to allow the expansion of savings and loans. We have now decided in the name of modernization to forget the lessons of the past, of safety and of soundness."

Sen. Byron Dorgan (D;ND), one of 7 Democrats who voted against the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Financial Services "Modernization" Act of 1999

6. It's *kinda* sappy and definitely made for people who have never given any thought to the economy
As such, it's filled with a lot of human-interest anecdotes and folksy humor. However, he makes some pretty interesting points and I learned a few things. For starters, he claims that most of the problems with trade pact enforcement can be laid right at the feet of the State Department. I was surprised to learn that. Sen. Dorgan claims that because the State Department's main job is to maintain good relations with other states, rather than to advocate for the American worker, they resist efforts to bring our trade partners into compliance with agreements because the powers that be feel that even broaching the subject of noncompliance will humiliate other countries and undermine positive relations. I've got no way to determine if he's right or not, but that sounds like quite the conundrum.

4. Anyone could have predicted this . . . you could have predicted it right after it was passed-!!!
Cause the GOP/corporate party has been trying to knock out the New Deal and

any regulations on capitalism from day one!!

5. and the late Sen. Paul Wellstone:
"Congress seems determined to unlearn the lessons from our past mistakes. Scores of banks failed in the Great Depression as a result of unsound banking practices, and their failure only deepened the crisis. Glass-Steagall was intended to protect our financial system by insulating commercial banking from other forms of risk. It was one of several stabilizers designed to keep a similar tragedy from recurring. Now Congress is about to repeal that economic stabilizer without putting any comparable safeguard in its place.''
