Diners can 'have a ball' at testicle festival

Will pay $50 apiece for the privilege of eating private parts of bulls

OAKDALE, Calif. - The fundraising idea may seem a little nuts, but Oakdale's annual Testicle Festival is always a big hit.

On Monday, volunteers with the town's Rotary Club plan to fry up 400 pounds of the private parts of bulls and serve them to diners who pay $50 apiece for the sit-down meal.

The event, whose proceeds also benefit the Oakland Cowboy Museum, has drawn an average of 450 people and last year raised $28,000.

It's common practice on cattle ranches for young male bovines to be castrated into steers, which after the initial loss, eventually makes them more docile and easier to handle. Fans of the delicacy, also referred to as "mountain oysters," come from around the state.

2. There is a Similar Festival in Virginia City, Nevada,
that's been held for a number of years. It's a big attraction, like the outhouse races and camel races.

5. I have had Rocky Mountain oysters in Denver at the Buckhorn Exchange...
No one at the table would touch them other than me.

"You guys ain't got any balls" I said as I ate them one by one.

Kind of like a cross between gator and chicken.
Went down nice with a shot of Chinaco and a ice cold beer.

6. I know someone who used to attend those things and he said that
those things were great.

I never quite believed it but then one side of my family came from the farm (decades ago) and they eat things like kidneys, tongue, sweetbreads, brains, and other 'organ' meats. They always said that it was good for you, tasted good, and there was nothing wrong with it.

When we were little my grandmother used to give us this special 'lunch meat' and we ate it. Until my grandfather told us what good kids we were for eating all our 'tongue'. NEVER AGAIN! In fact, although grandma was a fantastic cook, we were always suspicious of anything she ever tried to give us from that time on.
