Your Conficker To-Do List
Here's a little cheat sheet to help you get ready for conficker -- or at least feel guilty you haven't maintained your computer.

03.31.09

Worried about Wednesday's Conficker update? Here are eight action items that will help you weather the potential storm.

by Neil J. Rubenking

Unless you're living in a cave, by now you've heard that a worm known as Conficker (or Downadup, or Kido) has infested computer systems around the world, and that it will do something April 1st, though nobody knows exactly what. How can you be sure your computer doesn't become a casualty? Here are eight action items—things you can do yourself to weather the potential storm.

Double-check Windows Update...
Turn Off AutoRun...
Update Your Protection...
Get a Second Opinion ...
Check Your Servers...
Inoculate Your Servers...
Back Up, Back Up, Back Up...
Scared? Hide Under the Covers...

1. check, check, check
I recently had a motherboard burn out(hp pavillion) and it taught me to backup everything (I was lucky because they saved everything for me- yay HP techies). So now I'm doing it TWICE. I have two ext hard drives humming away. I only use one once a week to back up the backups, while the other one is used daily.

Everything's up to date.

My guess is this latest bug will be somewhat of more bark than bite. I remember y2k and a host of other big bus and their "release dates".

I would LOVE to see this one take over all the networks and run a 24 hour loop of "Never Gonna Give You Up"

9. Yes, I am also thinking that this is like the Y2K scare.
But I have taken all precautions, anyway. But as another poster asked, how do I turn off auto run?

3. Y2K Bug wiped out all computers
You are just living in The Matrix now. You're not really using your computer. There is no computer.

6. Um, just to let you guys know...
"ficker" means fucker in German-speaking countries and is a word most Europeans are familiar with.
So, conficker away to your heart's content in the US of A but don't expect to instill much confidence elsewhere. :)

10. I thought I came up with an easier answer
not like the arrogant rich people who own macs. However, this is a virus that is activated by the date April 1, 2009. Therefore, I changed the date on my computers to March 3, 2009. After tomorrow I will change them back to April 2, 2009. Problem solved, no?
