Senator stalls Duckworth's nomination

NC Sen. Burr stalls nomination of VA pick Tammy Duckworth

A Republican senator has delayed President Barack Obama's nomination of Tammy Duckworth, an injured Iraq war helicopter pilot, to be an assistant secretary at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The Senate Veterans Affairs Committee didn't vote on the nomination Thursday because North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr asked that the panel hold off. Burr, the top Republican on the committee, wants Duckworth and the White House to answer some of his questions. Burr's spokesman, David Ward, would not say on Friday what the questions concerned.

"He's doing his due diligence ... to ensure that veterans have the best representation possible," Ward said.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The committee chairman, Sen. Daniel Akaka, D-Hawaii, called it a "disappointing setback."

"Tammy Duckworth is a talented and qualified nominee who has already given so much for her country and the veterans she serves," Akaka said in a statement.

Duckworth, a major in the Illinois National Guard, lost both her legs and partial use of one arm in a rocket-propelled grenade attack in 2004. She ran for Congress in 2006, but lost. She's currently the director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs.

On Feb. 3, Obama nominated her to the position of assistant secretary of public and intergovernmental affairs. Her duties would include directing VA's public affairs operations, as well as programs for homeless veterans.

On Thursday, the committee did approve the nomination of W. Scott Gould to be deputy VA secretary.

6. Because he hasn't gotten around to asking her questions even

though her nomination was announced February 3rd. Or, he's doing his 'due diligence' by obstructing, and that's the marching orders the rethugs were given.

To make everyone's life miserable, as bad as theirs, seems more like it. There's nothing that Duckworth could possibly do except try to improve the mess of a VA Dems were left with. But no-o-o! x(

Fuck 'em and the elephants they rode in on.

I swear, God himself could be nominated for something, and the fucking fake bible thumpers on the GOP side of the aisle would go all obstructionist on him.

12. "God himself could be nominated"
If anything remotely resembling the Jesus portrayed in the Gospels showed up, they'd kill him.

17. So I wrote the little prick a letter:
Senator Burr:

I find it very telling that a man who never served in the armed forces a day in his life would block the nomination of Tammy Duckworth for Assistant Secretary of Veteran's Affairs.

In case you've forgotten who this hero is I'll repeat it here:

'Duckworth, a major in the Illinois National Guard, lost both her legs and partial use of one arm in a rocket-propelled grenade attack in 2004'.

This wounded combat veteran would rest easy if major Duckworth were to serve in the capacity she has been nominated for by the White House.

If she IS successfully blocked by you, rest assured that I will send the maximum legal donation to your opponent if you are primaried, and if you are not, then the next time you are up for election, your opponent will receive the same.

I plan to send a copy of this to every veteran I know.

Clifford (redacted cause I'm scared of DU'ers)
