My religious wacko brother never owned a gun, now he's joined the NRA.
My born again republican brother, who dropped acid and found Jesus 35 years ago, has never owned a gun, although I've always owned them, and my Democratic dad too, but my dad tells me little bro has purchased his first ever pistol, and is taking shooting lessons at the range, and even joined the National Rifle Association. Why the sudden interest in guns out of the blue? You get 3 guesses. No, one guess.

That's right, he's convinced that President Barack Obama is literally going to kick in all our doors and confiscate all of our guns. No joke, that's his reason.

I've always considered him mentally unstable, and now I consider him mentally unstable and armed, and easily manipulated by the right wing media.

So my bro has gone from dragging a large wooden cross down the street at the Mardi Gras, to target practice down at the gun range and NRA membership.

My dad also tells me that gun sales have sky rocketed in Florida and nationally too.

Folks, the far right wackos are getting lots of guns, we should all be concernced, no joke.

3. Speaking of finding Jesus

Because of people like your brother, I'm considering getting a gun as well. what has held me back is how much time it takes to get competent at using one.

5. Start with an airgun..
You can learn all the basics with an airgun, sight picture, sight alignment, BRASS (breathe, relax, aim, slack, squeeze) all at a very low initial price of entry and only about a penny per shot for pellets.

I shoot indoors with a pellet trap a lot and even more in the back yard, also with a pellet trap (basically two layers of carpet in a box).

My air rife, a Benjamin Discovery, can hit a dime quite reliably at fifty yards in still wind conditions.

8. That may be the ticket
I'm one of those people very likely to be more of a danger to myself than an assailant without extensive practice. The uncoordinated need far more repetitions of physical skills to achieve competence.

12. Or a .22
.22 ammo is still reasonable.

Sold by the "brick" = 500 rounds for $12 - $16.

Low cost, low recoil but still a firearm.

Good for practice. When I am showing a "newbie" how to shoot I will usually have them start w/ a good .22 pistol like Ruger MK III (well technically MK II but they aren't sold anymore).

Three most important things about firearms for self defense
1) good firearm
2) good training
3) good practice (and lots of it)

Many people whose only "exposure" to firearms has been Hollywood as genuinely suprised at how difficult it is to consistently aim a pistol and how much harder it is to quickly fire accurately.
Just pointing the gun in the direction and mashing the trigger a bunch of times tend to only damage the air.

16. You pretty much have to go to the range with a 22 or any other firearm..
Makes it a lot more difficult to get in a lot of practice.

Your other points are well taken though.

19. Any of these will do just fine to learn to shoot a pistol..
The first link is to single pump pistols..

http://www.airgundepot.com/single-pump-air-pistols.html

Here is the best deal I've found on a pistol, three to five pumps is fine for indoor practice, keeps the noise and velocity down but still enough for good accuracy.

http://www.airgundepot.com/rosman-airguns-1377c-american-classic-air-pistol-remanufactured.html

You're right, repetition is the key to success in shooting, an air pistol will give you lots of opportunities for repetition since you don't have to go to the range to shoot.

The great majority of far right whackos already have lots of guns.. Your brother is a bit of an oddball in that respect.

6. And They'll End Up Shooting One Another...
Edited on Thu Apr-09-09 06:32 AM by KharmaTrain
I'm very concerned with the rise of wingnuts with quick trigger fingers out there. Hate Radio and Faux have whipped up paranoia to hold onto those 25% dead-enders out there and this has been to spread all sorts of fear. Irrational and self destructive in so many ways...especially in their own hive.

Yes, there is a great concern that these asshats will lose it...as we saw in Pittsburgh last weekend, but, as we saw, the biggest victim was the shooter and his family. Those fools who play "patriot" and commit suicide by police are only hurting their own causes and I, sadly, expect too many of these guns to result in a rise in domestic violence...not political.

Don't want to wait for another tragedy and then say, "Damn, I should have done something."

Its too late then.

I know this isn't something you would look forward to doing but it may be your best option for everyone concerned.

Thats what I would do in this situation.

Edited on Thu Apr-09-09 07:45 AM by jmg257
More guns + (fear of the govt + rw mouthpieces +/- a bad economic situation) = more shootings.

More shootings = more gun control = fulfillment of anti-gun fear = more...

And away we go...

20. The NRA? Ask your brother about this...
If you were a government agency, where would you look for conservative firearms owners? Why...the NRA membership list, of course!

While the NRA says they don't sell their membership list to advertisers, they do, apparently, sell it to mailing list brokers. See this story: http://www.dmnews.com/Complete-Mailing-Lists-Has-Gun-Owner-Database/article/92334/

Then watch his head explode...

21. I wonder who Jesus would shoot?
I mean, who would the Prince of Peace draw down on, sight, and pull the trigger? The man who, when the authorities came to arrest him on bogus charges that would cost him his life, refused even to let his followers draw their weapons? I'd really like to know how your brother squares the scene at Gethsemane with his own purchase of a lethal weapon.

When Jesus said, "Love your enemies," I think he probably meant "Don't shoot them."

Perhaps he bought one because he thought it might be harder and more expensive to buy one in the future. Regardless he seems to be going about it responsibly enough.
