Palin's AK AG nominee "“If a guy can’t rape his wife…who’s he gonna rape?”
To those who say "why should we keep Palin in the news"...I give you this:

http://www.themudflats.net/2009/04/09/tune-in-to-kudo/#comments

Tomorrow House Judiciary Committee will meet and take citizen testimony on the nomination of Wayne Anthony Ross to be our next Attorney General.

Leah Burton is on with CC, sharing her testimony regarding Wayne Anthony Ross. She is a former citizen lobbyist who worked on behalf of families and children concerning child support, child custody, domestic violence, child abuse and sexual assault.

She discusses a meeting of the group DADS, being run by Wayne Anthony Ross, and what she heard.

Numerous comments were made that were appalling, not the least of which were remarks by Mr. Ross which included the following; “If a guy can’t rape his wife…who’s he gonna rape?” and “There wouldn’t be an issue with domestic violence if women would learn to keep their mouths shut.”

Other members made their own contributions such as, “We have the right to discipline our wives and children without the interference of government in our lives!”

25. On kids with 'toy guns': "I never thought that aggressive tendencies were bad"
http://www.ogca.com/WAR_Maybe.htm

Nowadays there are many people who say kids shouldn’t have toy guns at all; they claim that toy guns foster aggressive tendencies in kids. I never thought that aggressive tendencies were bad. I’d rather have aggressive kids than passive kids.

26. Ross on gays: He'd invite them to dinner and "try to convert 'em"
http://www.ieatgravel.com/?p=4185

In a 1993 article that Wayne Anthony Ross wrote for the Alaska Bar Rag, he criticized LAD (Lawyers Against Discrimination) who were supporting an Anchorage ordinance seeking to bar discrimination based on sexual preference.

This bill seems to give extra rights to those whose lifestyle was a crime only a few years ago, and whose beliefs are certainly immoral,” Ross wrote. “You support degenerates. … You collectively contribute $5000 to the cause of sexual perversion.”
When asked if he had changed his stance in the past 15 years he replied:

I wrote it, and I haven’t changed my mind.”

I think there is something unnatural about that ,” Ross adds, “That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t invite somebody like that to dinner. But I might try to convert ‘em.

47. Now he is comparing hatred of gays to hating lima beans
Edited on Sat Apr-11-09 02:39 PM by rainbow4321
You couldn't make this shit up if you tried.

http://www.adn.com/politics/story/756118.html

Legislators also questioned Ross about statements that he made in writing about gays in 1993. Ross used words like "immoral," "degenerates," and "perversion" in a letter to the state bar association during a fight over gay rights.

"I know that letter was upsetting to me and upsetting to my constituents," Anchorage Democratic Rep. Lindsey Holmes told him. "Do you stand by your characterizations in that letter?"

Ross replied that his personal opinions have nothing to do with the job of Alaska attorney general, and he'd uphold the laws of the state.

"I hate lima beans, I never liked lima beans. But if I was hired to represent the United Vegetable Growers, would you ask me if I liked lima beans? No. Would I tell you if I disliked lima beans? No, because my job is to represent the United Vegetable Growers," Ross said.

14. More on him and his quotes
http://mamadance.wordpress.com/2009/03/27/who-is-wayne-anthony-ross/

”Mom would get upset, ” said his oldest son, Greg. ”But if school opened on the first of September, guess what? The Ross kids would not be there. We’d be hunting with dad.”
(snip)

“He’s a churchgoing Roman Catholic and considers it the state’s duty to protect life. He said he does not favor more laws attempting to restrict abortion but that the government should try to persuade women to bear their babies. If they can’t or won’t raise them, many other people would love to, he said.”

”’I feel I have a good relationship with the good Lord (but) if I could overturn Roe vs. Wade, I figure I got my ticket,’ he said.”

(snip)
”He’s arrogant and opinionated, ” Mendel said. ”He shows up (in court) with his cowboy boots and cowboy hat and doesn’t stand up when the judge comes in. . . . He has a very definite view of the world.”

“He thrives on confrontation.”

”He can dig in and be very belligerent, say there’s my way and no way, ” said Close.

http://alaskareal.blogspot.com/2009/04/afn-letter-says-palins-ag-pick-is-unfit.html

In his most recent gubernatorial bid, Mr. Ross stated that, if elected, he would hire “…a band of junkyard dog assistant attorney generals to challenge the federal law…” This is old news. The constitutionality of Title VIII of ANILCA has been challenged time and again in the federal courts. The courts have consistently upheld the rural subsistence priority on federal lands and waters in Alaska. That is settled law.

8. You know, I give. I was one of those who believed Palin actually might make a run at 2012.
Honestly, I thought she'd figure out how to be media savvy, get stroked by the MSM for 4 years, coddled by the RNC... but this? This can't be played down. This can't be brushed off. Marital rape isn't something to be trivialized or approved. That's just too much of a basic human right in the US (yes, I know there are SOME dominist types out there who do endorse this position but I would posit that they really are just too far out there).

Mea culpa. I think she's jumping the shark by nominating this guy. This can't be anything but a major problem for her political future.

:wow:

18. Called Palin and her outfit "provocative..she looked good"
Backstory: Palin wore a jacket with the name of the company that $ponsor$ her husband's team while she did her photo ops at the Iron Dog..seen as a big no-no as she is the state's governor..this was Ross' response when questioned about the questionable ethics violation:

http://divasblueoasis.com/diary/524/news-from-juneau-part-5-i-want-to-start-screaming

Representative Ramras: "We have a Governor who is provocative in a lot of her actions. Recently it comes to mind when she was in Fairbanks for the finish line for the Iron Dog she was wearing Arctic Cat gear...Arctic Cat letters..."

Wayne Anthony Ross: "It was provocative, she looked very good in them, didn't she?"

24. Here is his (half hearted) attempt to defend himself
Edited on Fri Apr-10-09 11:12 PM by rainbow4321
Copy of his letter in response to what has been reported....basically, I don't recall addressing the group but IF I did it was not at the place they said it was at"...preceeding that sentence was him saying that he and the group had nothing to do with each other after someone misidentified a belligerent video store customer as Ross when it was really someone connected to DADS. Bizzare rant in his part, you have to read it.

More imporantly, check out page four about another woman quoting him at yet another meeting, this time involving domestic violence. His defense: he only meant "the film gave the misimpression that only men commit domestic violence against women"... "that men, too, can be victims of domestic violence", that he knows that after his "years of experience" in the field"

BTW....it's been questioned WHY he used the AK AG letterhead when he has YET to be appointed. (on edit: apparently, under AK state law, even though he has NOT been appointed as AG, he gets "full power as AG between the time he’s appointed by the gov and his confirmation vote by the legislature" per a Mudflats poster--how fucking scary is THAT????)

37. Maybe I used the wrong word...I was referring to his "I don't remember"
His memory is conveniently clear enough to insist he didn't make the comment but too foggy to know IF he even met with the group...but clear enough to know IF he did, it was another Denny's.

Basically, he knows he is damned if he say outright "I was never at a Denny's with this group" and then something or another someone surfaces and says "yeah, you were, I was at that meeting".

If the AK legislature approves of this, then keeping her in the news is just as irrelevant as she is.

If this idiot gets the AG job, Palin isn't really the problem. The problem is all of AK politics.

Lastly, don't you think this diva might be interested in stirring the pot to KEEP herself in the news? So, you're fulfilling her wishes by suggesting that we do not ignore her.

I'm sticking with ignoring her.

The Alaska Attorney General is the Government of the State of Alaska's chief legal advisor. He is appointed by the governor and confirmed by the state legislature.

Palin appointed him, so she IS a big part of the problem. Rather like mrbush was a big part of the problem of John Roberts being on the SCOTUS

If we have a fault, it's that we're too gullible and want to believe the best of our politicians -- and they let us down almost every time.

58. "Vile" & "Disgusting" were the two words that immediately came to my mind also.
And I was going to say "human being" but quickly stopped myself. If he truly said these things, he is INHUMAN.

60. Maybe she LIKES the kind of compliments he gives...
... about her appearance.

Some women actually like being catcalled at, unbelievable as it sounds. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Palin fell under that category... and that maybe she picked him as an in-house ego-stroker?

57. One good thing to say about S. Palin ...
she remains true to her character - or what we're learning about her character. She is consistent and constant.

It seems that she has no qualms or hesitations about looking like and being a fool?

Katherine Harris, Michelle Bachmann, Jean Schmidt, Ann Coulter, Sarah Palin.

What a similar way to make fools of themselves and their Party.

75. There is so much wrong with this choice for AG,
it's hard to know where to start. This is only one piece of the whole picture.

Equally as troubling as his views toward women are his views toward Native Alaskans. There are some very good posts here:

http://alaskareal.blogspot.com/2009/04/alaska-federation-of-natives-votes-to.html
http://alaskareal.blogspot.com/2009/04/afn-letter-says-palins-ag-pick-is-unfit.html
http://alaskareal.blogspot.com/2009/04/another-native-group-opposes-palins-ag.html

I've worked in and around the Alaska legal community since I first moved here in 1975. While I don't know WAR personally, I certainly know him by reputation. There is not a more divisive choice that Sarah could have made to fill this position -- and she knows it.

Here is his response to the Burton allegation: http://community.adn.com/adn/node/140440

88. We do get to look forward to Pres Obama and his team to wipe the floor with this guy
if he becomes AK's AG.

The guy made a comment at one point when he was running for AK gov that he would assign "junkyard guard dogs-like attorneys" in the AK AG office to go after the federal government.
Can't wait for him to be sent scurrying away with his tail between his legs when he tries that with the current administration.
