HEB Grocery Stores Closed for Easter. WTF?
Edited on Sat Apr-11-09 02:27 PM by Avalux
Consider this - a city of 2 million people with ONE grocery store chain. San Antonio is a slave to HEB who managed to drive out Kroger, Albertson's, Handy Andy and a few others over the years. Now, unless I want to buy my food at Wal-Mart, Target or drive miles and miles to health food stores, I HAVE to shop at HEB. There is no alternative.

So it's Saturday. I need food and I wasn't intending to grocery shop today (my least favorite thing in the world anyway). My usual routine is to knock it out on Sunday around lunch time.

I'm just pissed I have to go get groceries now. Also pissed I feel like a hostage to that damn store that's always overcrowded and never has anything on the shelves. Do they know how many people they're inconveniencing for a religious holiday?

:grr:

1. You would rather their employees have to work on a holiday?
even if it's not a holiday I celebrate, I think it's fine if people get this day off. With pay, of course.

3. Explain then why they were open on Christmas Day.
I'm sure there are employees who would be willing to work; even later in the day.

14. Easter is actually the more significant holiday.
For devout Christians, Easter is THE holiday, marking the death and resurrection of Jesus. Fundamentalists who slough off Christmas are still likely to be radicals about Easter.

29. Easter always falls on a Sunday, and Sundays things used to be closed anyway.
Makes sense to me, so that employees can spend the day with families on a weekend for once, regardless of their religion.

20. Perhaps because Easter is the High Holy Day for big C Christians and x-mas
Edited on Sat Apr-11-09 02:36 PM by uppityperson
is not? Are they run by big C Christians?

x-mas is only celebration of Jesus' birth, and now family day. Easter is celebration of the torture/death/rising/resurrection of Jesus, hence The High Holy Day.

40. Um, Sundays are not "holidays"..and Christmas is the only
Edited on Sat Apr-11-09 03:38 PM by SoCalDem
"government-sanctioned" holiday..

It's a rare store (especially chain stores) that closes and gives all its people a "day off" for a holiday.

When I worked at a supermarket, those days were triple-time holidays, and people lined up to GET the opportunity to work them..

A Mom & Pop store that observes their particular religious holidays, is one thing, but a chain store that imposes religious holy day observation on people who may not observe them..well that's kind of weird, to say the least..

Kansas used to have "blue laws" & ALL commerce stopped at closing time on Saturdays (usually 5:30 pm) and did not start up until opening time on Mondays..

A blue law is a type of law, typically found in the United States and Canada, designed to enforce religious standards, particularly the observance of Sunday as a day of worship or rest, and a restriction on Sunday shopping. Most have been repealed, have been declared unconstitutional, or are simply unenforced, although prohibitions on the sale of alcoholic beverages, and occasionally almost all commerce, on Sundays are still enforced in many areas. Blue laws often prohibit an activity only during certain hours and there are usually exceptions to the prohibition of commerce, like grocery and drug stores. In some places blue laws may be enforced due to religious principles, but others are retained as a matter of tradition or out of convenience.
Laws of this type are also found in non-Christian cultures such as Israel, where the day concerned is Saturday rather than Sunday, and Saudi Arabia, where the month of Ramadan is involved

I, for one, couldn't give a rat's ass about any religious holiday and would be happy to work every one of them in exchange for other days off of my choosing.

2. We've started commuting to grocery shop.
We drive 45 minutes to shop at a Wegman's instead of locally because we can manage to save more money on groceries than we spend in gas. Plus they're a more labor friendly chain than the Albertson (Acme) stores that dominate here.

You might want to consider going out of town yourself.

Obviously I can't vouch for any of these since I'm thousands of miles away, but it really couldn't hurt to cast your net wider and try to find alternatives.

I know that for spending $5.00 in gas (at current prices) to get to Wegman's, we save at least $10.00 on just the cost of our cat food over the local Acme or Shop-Rite! Add in the lower prices on other items and we'd be insane to shop here in town ever again. Especially with the new Super Wal-Mart cutting down the few small grocers left.

San Antonio shuts down like its run by senior citizens. Lots of stores close at 8. Cant get anything good to eat after 10. Nobody delivers 24 hours for anything. Hell when the roads barely ice up during the winter the whole town shuts down. I hate this place.

41. HEB
I live right outside of San Antonio and stopped using HEB years ago. Their stores and service have gradually deteriorated since they drove out almost all of their competition. And, I'll never forget that their stores were the central distribution point for free copies of The Starr Report. Walmart Supercenters have almost everything HEB does and you can save money there as well. I also find the employees at Walmart to be very friendly and helpful.

47. HEB was founded
and is still owned by the Butts family, hard-shell Baptists. For years, HEB didn't even sell beer or wine. They finally started after the old man died. When I lived in SA back in the 70's, we shopped at Handy Andy, cause it was open Sunday and sold alkyhol. Not so HEB! But times change. I just got home from HEB, had to buy more beer cause they're closed tomorrow. OMG, I had to plan ahead! Not really, I was out buying duck food because the feed store is closed on Sundays too, and went right by HEB, and remembered "uh, Easter" and you can never have too much beer. Both places were insanely crowded. I saw two of those power scooter things almost crash in the potato chip aisle.

50. Ownership of HEB is still private. They can do what they want, even
stay closed every Sunday of the year, if they want.

I have known alot of people who have worked at HEB. My most recent acquaintance is getting her MBA in Management, paid for by HEB as was her undergrad degree, while she works there. She is also a single mom. They didn't stereotype her. She indicated a willingness to learn, and they've helped her pursue her goals. Management gets treated pretty well by the company. I know of people making $12/hour who have retired there with excellent profit-sharing savings accounts for their retirement.

I fear regular employees, though, are starting to slip into the same situation as most employees of WalMart. WalMart is causing this, to some degree, creating a race to the bottom.

We have choices, Target or HEB or another company. Companies don't have to be available to us every day of the week, 24 hours a day. Banks aren't, either, and if their ATMs aren't working, tough. I'm in healthcare, but I'm not available 24/7 either. People need to plan ahead.
