BFGoodrich closing Opelika plant that employs 1,000
Associated Press
Updated 2:25 p.m.

OPELIKA — A BFGoodrich tire plant in east Alabama is closing, a decision that will cost about 1,000 jobs.

Executives met with employees at the BFGoodrich plant in Opelika on Monday to inform them that the factory will shut down permanently by Oct. 31.

The move will cost about 800 hourly jobs and another 200 management positions.

The chief operation officer of BFGoodrich, Scott Clark, blamed the decision on decreasing demand for tires. He said demand for replacement tires has declined three of the last four years.

The decision doesn't affect the company's plant in Tuscaloosa or Fort Wayne, Ind., which employ about 1,500 people each.

1. How very sad.
Probably another American town(s) decimated when a major employer shuts down.

And we know for sure that the same work is NOT being outsourced to other countries? They are not simultaneously opening up or expanding a factory someplace else are they? Just asking.

I realize that the car industry is in the tank and it stands to reason that the tire industry would be close behind.

I mourn the loss of good union jobs.

3. It's a town of 25,000, so that's a huge hit.
I haven't heard about them outsourcing.

4. Damn !!!!
Is the plant moving off shore, or is it just simply no revenue???

The papermill plant ( ARN ) here that had cut hours to one week a month finally closed down, for good.
150 jobs gone . Not outsourcing...just no demand for newsprint.

5. No outsourcing that I know of,
but most of the production workers are union. I will report back when more details are available.
