Susan Boyle's virtual makeover

Makeover debate fires up over 'Idol' sensation Susan Boyle

April 18, 2009

Once people stopped marveling at Susan Boyle's voice, they started talking about her look, including her caterpillar-like eyebrows. Let the makeover debate begin.

This past week, Boyle won over the judges on "Britain's Got Talent" and millions of viewers who have watched her performance via the Internet.

"I won't let Simon Cowell take her to his dentist, and I certainly won't let her near his hairdresser," "Britain's Got Talent" judge Amanda Holden told the UK Mirror.

The matronly 48-year-old "needs to stay exactly as she is because that's the reason we love her," said Holden, who happens to be a flaxen-haired beauty with a flawless complexion. "She just looks like anybody who could live on your street.

1. I don't understand why people are falling all over themselves
praising her singing, but...whatever floats your boat, I suppose.

4. I thought her voice was beautiful, too
When even Simon Cowell has nothing snarky to say, you know she was impressive.

21. Simon was looking at her with love in his eyes!
Actually all 3 of them had a look of total adoration as she sang.

13. It's not just her voice (which is clear as a bell) - it's her spirit and her story.
"Never been married, never been kissed." Lives alone (with her cat)
in a village in Scotland. Last of 9 children, suffered from oxygen deprivation
at birth with some resultant learning disabilities. Cared for both her parents
till they passed away. Has done social work but is currently unemployed.

Promised her 'mum' that one day she would sing in front of a large audience.

Her mother must be so proud!

I love Susan Boyle and hope she doesn't change a thing. She's beautiful,
just as she is.

24. she has a fine voice, but I really suspect it's the juxtaposition of her looks
and that moment of tension when the judges are more or less humiliating her before she starts singing. There's an almost archetypal 'hero' aspect to it. The secret hero in 'everyman'. A common theme.

Which is why, I think, people are so adamant about her not changing how she looks. Seems to me if people really cared most about her singing, as they claim, then it wouldn't matter either way if she decided to get a makeover or not.

2. If it's not Diane Saywer being smug and catty
Edited on Sat Apr-18-09 04:05 AM by depakid
(and looking like an empty, dried up media whore) then it's Amanda Holder being presumptuous.

I think maybe Ms. Holder might just let Susan to make her own mind up as to what she want to do....

Crikey.

Memo to all men bashers: when it comes to certain deals- women are often much harder on each other than men would ever be.

5. I agree. Susan might just love having a makeover.

If not, she should stay as she is. But either way it really should be up to her.

6. Larry King asked her if she wanted a makeover and she said: "Why should I?"
She likes herself the way she is -- and I think that's a big part of why people have responded so strongly to her.

(Someone should ask Larry King if HE wants a makeover. Last time I checked, he could use one.)

14. That's just what *I * thought! He was so rude and insulting to her, kept asking her how it felt
to see people laughing at her. I wanted to ask him
if he knows that people cringe when they look at *him* - and he
has no talent whatsoever to compensate, just stupidity and
empty questions recited like a dirge, night after night.

Susan Boyle, on the other hand, is full of life and honest
as the day is long.

I can't stand Larry King! And it shows how out-of-touch he is that he had
Ashton Kutcher and P. Diddy on for over 45 minutes, talking about Twitter,
with Susan Boyle tacked in the last few minutes like a footnote when she is, literally,
taking the world by storm. Can someone give that man a clue?

17. When I tuned in to Susan Boyle (just having heard that she'd be on )
I couldn't believe how lucky I was to see all of her segment and not to have to sit through the rest of the show.

19. Thank you for your common sense. n/t
My son causes some people to cringe when they first see him. When he was a child customers in restaurants actually told us his face made them lose their appetite and we should not take him out. Having walked a bit in Susan's shoes I say, "Bravo" to her and to those who are like thinking like Larry King -- STFU.

22. I'm so sorry to hear that people have behaved that way toward your son and can't imagine
the pain that must have caused. Some people have no soul.

As for what's happening with Susan Boyle, I can hardly believe the things that people are saying to her,
on the air - horrible, hurtful things - and they think it's all right as long as, at the end,
they say what a nice voice she has. That does not redeem *them* and their total insensitivity
toward another human being.

Idiots!~

30. Thank you for your kind words.
There are idiots in the world and that moment became a teachable one. Two of the lessons that day, "That which does not kill me, makes me stronger," and to not judge a book by its cover.

27. Somehow, I have the feeling it never occured to me that he
should do anything but sit in judgment of someone else, looks wise. Like one of those enormously fat guys in a small bathing suit on the beach. Are they spending all day worried about how they look and sucking it in? Nope. (And so far ,that's probably a good thing). But watch a woman with a few extra pounds walk by and hear what he says about her.

9. Diane Sawyer was condescending and insulting to her
It's one thing to discuss Susan Boyle's appearance with others (not that that's acceptable either), and quite another to intimate directly to her on TV that she needs a makeover. :puke:

You go, Susan, baby! Do whatever YOU want to do! :yourock:

7. "needs to stay exactly as she is because that's the reason we love her,"
That's just as bad as the people saying she needs to get a makeover.

She's a grown woman, long since capable of deciding these things for herself.

12. Yeah. Since when did she become public property, that everyone now has a right
to tell her what to do?

"You need a makeover."

"No you don't. You need to stay as you are."

If I were her, I'd tell 'em all to sod off.

18. But her answer to getting a makeover was: "Why should I?"
She's happy with herself. So if she got a makeover, it would be a sign, to me, that she had buckled to pressure.

:wow: Hyperbole much?

Gordon M:
"Susan Boyle is without a doubt the greatest talent ever. No one but none one past future or present can measure up to her. She is totally in a class all by herself. She is a once in a lifetime experience. There has never been a singer of her quality. With the proper talent agent and manager she will truly make history. It is a shame that such a talent has been hidden from the world for so many years.Like they say it's better late than never. Hooray for Susan Boyle she is the greatest."

28. W-A-A-A-Y over the top. The buildup to knock down.
Her rise to "stardom" is in a class all by itself, a tribute to the wonders of modern technology. Her story is cathartic. HOWEVER, may I remind everyone that this is only the first round. Who knows what story lines we're in for. The glare of publicity is a double-edged sword. ;-)
