As long as people believe torture was "To Protect America" they walk...
When push comes to shove with all this "Prosecute the Torturers" talk, we'll be treated, for the umpteenth time, with the "24" scenario:

"If you have a suspect who can provide information that would save thousands of American lives, wouldn't it be a dereliction of duty NOT to torture if that's what it takes?"

Count on it.

Of course, in reality, just the opposite occurred. Zubaydah talked right up to his torture. And then he clammed up. I posted a thread earlier today on this:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=5503402&mesg_id=5503402

And now we find that torture was used in an attempt to establish a Iraq-al Qaida link:

This is critical. Remove the "Honorable Torture" excuse and Cheney et. al. are in trouble. Allow it to stand and they walk.

2. So, they waterboarded Khalid Sheikh Mohammed 183 times.

The 9/11 commission relied on his "confessions" when preparing the "report".

So they relied on the tortured confessions to find that he was the alleged "mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks" - wonder what they would have relied upon had he not been tortured.

3. It's a dangerous narrative to embrace
Torture was done for the good of America....very dangerous thinking.

You can justify any atrocity with that thinking

6. No kidding. Plus, you lose the ability to protest when US soldiers
are tortured. Talk about a slippery slope!

7. What's even scarier is that it's still the Conventional Wisdom....
maybe not with intelligence professionals, but the general public is still a sucker for the argument.

Few seem willing to take it on in the MSM, Sy Hersh excepted.

10. That is why a real investigation of 9/11 is so damn important.
You pull that crutch out from under the last eight years and the whole thing rips wide open.
