Janis Karpinski is outraged
and so am I.

The more I learn, the more outraged I become.

It has reduced me to tears.

16. Rumsfeld needs
to be tried. My only concern is that there are some in Washington who want to use his prosecution to stop the legal consequences from going further. There needs to be a full accounting, including VP Cheney and his assistant, George Bush.

20. Wish she was in front of senate hearing or at least on msm so that more
people could see and hear (As much as I like Keith, for her to go to Keith first may undercut her message with a lot of people).

Still...I'll take it. Maybe more and more people everyday will speak up and get exposure so that they finally will be invited by the senate or by msm to tell their story. An avalanche of outrage and truth. Much better than Boehner, Gingrich, and Rove out there lambasting Obama for releasing the truth to the public.

They demanded she take responsibility, she made some noise about the CIA running Abu G. with her as a figurehead, and then she quietly went away - under threat, no doubt.

Until now, she didn't attack their criminality directly, but she didn't fall on her sword for them either.

I just watched an Errol Morris documentary - "Standard Operating Procedure" - about what really went on at Abu Ghraib. Karpinski is one of the people who talks about the experience.

Riveting. A necessary movie everyone should see.

Also very hard to watch. I managed about ten minutes at a time. Very difficult .................................................................

37. Hi you in CA :-)
I've said so before: action on the torture issue is key to regaining international standing.

After the ugly truth of Abu Ghraib images, the even uglier truth of an institutional ("systemic" :sarcasm:) torture policy will have to see the light of day.

Cleansing a wound is both painful and necessary.

45. it's a really cathartic moment isn't it
Edited on Wed Apr-22-09 09:18 PM by BelgianMadCow
for those of us that consider Colbert's speech to Bush on the white house correspondents' association dinner historic. Together with Al Gore's scathing speech on MLK day, landmarks

Colbert: (MUST SEE)
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-869183917758574879

Gore: (unfortunately, can't find the entire thing which is awesome x 2)
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3313623747767874725

The way they brought their message could hardly be more different - but both moved me to tears (ok, Colbert to laughter as well, but a strange kind).
EVERY bit as relevant today. No, make that more so.

ps you made me look up QFT :-) thanks :hi:

OGA. Some were military intelligence and some were CIA but it wasn't really the job of these guards to ask for a pedigree. Not to many contractors, though, as far as I can tell from reading.

44. IIRC, she was pissed years before and wrote a book about it.
I bought and read that book. I heard a longer than usual radio clip of her today, and she's pissed all over again, and I could hear it in her voice.

What really blows my mind is the number (s) of people around me who just walk around as if it's business as usual, and they've been this way for the past 7 yrs. None of this seems to affect them at all. Fucking amazing in a crazy sort of way.

48. For anyone who read "Fiasco" this is nothing new
the details yes but Ricks spells out how Army units had to create their own detention facilities because they knew that anyone they sent to Abu Gharib would be lost for 6 months or so and no actionable intelligence would ever come out of them. Plus, of course, they knew that the Iraqis knew what was going on there and sending anynoee there would infuriate their family, neighborhood, and community.

Randi also was talking about how the Bush administration was tapping members of Congress.

Regardless of how her style sits with you (universal 'you'), we need voices like Randi's exposing the truth.
