I don't think I recall any really prominent trials of average individuals who claimed they tortured someone for their own protection. If an individual has enough control over someone to torture them, then it's not like someone shooting another person who's trying to kill them.

Torture is NOT self defense for an individual. Why should it be any different for a group of individuals?

1. torture=sadism
It's not about self-defence, and it's not even about gaining information. It's to inflict terror and pain. It is about sadism.
The elephant in the room is the sadistic sick MF'rs who got off on this, by giving orders, by putting it in writing, and I would not be surprised to find out Rummy watched the videos in his basement every night.

3. When's the last time a tiny nation invaded a superpower because
the superpower "was a threat to our way of life?"

Funny how the people with all the power are always the ones who do despicable things to weaker people because the weaker person was "a threat."

4. Legally, I don't think it would be torture, if it were done by
an individual. It has to be done under cover of the law to consitute torture.
