Cheney the visible
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/26/weekinreview/26harwood.html?_r=1
<snip>
At the same time, Mr. Cheney’s talent for polarization works both ways. His aggressive defense of the Bush administration has energized the Democrats.

“He’s the least popular public figure in the country,” said Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont, the Democratic chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and the target of an expletive from Mr. Cheney on the Senate floor several years ago. “The more he talks, the more people say, you’ve got to get to the bottom of this.”

And this, in turn, suggests that Mr. Cheney’s agenda is his own. Mr. Mondale, himself a vice president in an unpopular administration, speculated that Mr. Cheney’s combative stance stems from “an obsession” with the unfettered use of executive authority for national security. “After 9/11, they took the gloves off,” Mr. Mondale said. “He just can’t let it go.”

Mr. Mondale, who knows a good deal about the complex relationships between chief executives and their understudies, suspects Mr. Bush, unlike his combative vice president, is prepared to move on. “I wonder whether Bush, at this point in his life, wants to be defined by Cheney’s attitudes,” he said.

3. As an ex-VP, how does he have the power to call the CIA and request
papers? Shouldn't they remind him he's out and has to go through the present administration to obtain what he wants? I'm really ignorant on this but I'd just love for the CIA to hang up on him....LOL.

5. fyi
It looks like he did go through the proper channels ...

http://www.politico.com/blogs/joshgerstein/0409/Hot_doc_Cheneys_request_to_declassify_intel_from_torture_.html

" Former Vice President Dick Cheney is asking the Obama administration to declassify two documents on intelligence obtained from the so-called enhanced interrogation program that critics have decried as torture, according to a copy of his request obtained by POLITICO.

The form filed with the National Archives' Presidential Libraries section on March 31 of this year shows that Cheney asked for declassification review of the two items from a folder called "detainees" within "OVP Cheney immediate office files." The titles of the memoranda or reports were blacked out for classification reasons, however, one memo sought was dated July 13, 2004, and totaled eight pages, and another dated June 1, 2005, totals 13 pages.

Cheney filled out the request himself--it's in his handwriting. The Archives later amended Cheney's request to describe the two records simply as CIA reports (probably more vaguely than the ex-veep did). The archvists also upped the page counts to a total of 31. "

8. That's understandable because SCLM sure made it sound that way

from a Yahoo News article:

"Former Vice President Dick Cheney says he’s asked the CIA to declassify more documents about the interrogation of suspected terrorists beyond those released by the Obama administration — documents he says will show the Bush administration did get results with its techniques."
