Get ready for the GOP to go all out on Franken
by John Aravosis (DC) on 4/28/2009 03:12:00 PM

Joe has been keeping you up to date about the Al Franken vs. Norm Coleman race in Minnesota - a race that Al Franken won five months ago. The Republicans have been basically filibustering the election, using legal maneuvers, like a convict on death row, to stop the state from certifying Franken's victory. The GOP goal isn't to win the election - they know they've already lost - it's to hope that nobody cares if they just keep appealing and appealing legal loss after loss, stopping Minnesota from getting its second senator, ever, but more importantly, stopping the Democrats from getting their 60th Senate seat.

That means that whatever pressure national Republicans were putting on Coleman before, it's going to be far worse now. Perhaps now the Democrats in Washington will care about the Franken race, because they sure rolled over and played dead up until now. Had the Dems only challenged Coleman earlier, forced him to concede the way that they'd have forced us were the situation reversed, perhaps we'd have sixty seats today. Oh well, another profile in Democratic courage that ends up biting us in the behind.

David Waldman at DKos has a delicious idea:

Seat Al Franken and give him his committee assignments now, or we'll block a new organizing resolution that would let you reassign Specter's previously Republican committee seats to one of your own.

In other words, the GOP just lost a seat on every committee that Specter sat on. They can't reassign Specter's seat to another GOP Senator without a new organizing resolution, something we can block.

1. that is ruthless
I like it. Damn, when the hell did Dems get this mean? It's kind of fun. I'm going to start walking around with a sword or something just to fit in.

2. I'm sure I'm in the minority...
but I think this kind of stuff is now a requirement. There are too many important things that we need to accomplish to play Mr. Nice Guy anymore.

4. I agree for the most part
However, I think that Obama, for example, can mostly play nice guy, but others can do the head cracking if it is called for. But, for the most part, playing tough is the only way you get things done, the GOP is too inflexible, you almost have to knock them around to do anything.

8. Agreed.
The Obama admin has already shown that they're pretty good at the good cop/bad cop routine. Obama can generally stay above the fray, and there are plenty of members of his admin who have, shall we say, strong personalities who can do the 'dirty' work.

6. You do realize Reid will do whatever the Repukes want, right?
He's got the driest powder in town, and doesn't want his friends on the other side of the aisle to get mad at him.

5. Obama extended his hand and they bit it.
I would now like to quote the immortal words of former Providence RI mayor Buddy Cianci :

"The toe you step on today may be connected to the ass you have to kiss tomorrow"

13. We would be far better off running a real Democrat against him.
He's a ruthless, totally selfish opportunist who will do us no good. Why do some people think that by "changing sides," Spector will suddenly become a valuable resource? He will vote the same ways he's always voted, always to suit himself and his own goals. What he WILL do is keep another actual Democrat with some amount of integrity out of the Senate.

The Dems have to step up and get Franken seated.
