My town closes schools due to flu. First death inside US in Houston...
http://www.star-telegram.com/804/story/1346564.html

Four Cleburne High School students have been listed as probable cases of swine flu, which has prompted officials to close three campuses on Wednesday.

The high school, the TEAM alternative school and the Phoenix disciplinary school were closed, said Lisa Magers, schools spokeswoman.

"This is TAKS week, so this is a tough week for this, but we want what's best for our kids' safety," Magers said.

School officials were notified at 4:30 a.m. by the Texas Department of Health that four students from the high school probably have swine flu, Magers said.

This brings this Swine Flu scare too close to home...

Officials say the first confirmed death in the U.S. from swine flu was a 23-month-old Mexican child who died in Houston.

Kathy Barton, a spokeswoman for the Houston Health and Human Services Department, said Wednesday that the child had traveled with family from Mexico to Brownsville in south Texas. She says the child became ill in Brownsville and was taken to a Houston hospital and died Monday night.

The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the death earlier Wednesday.

1. The child was from Mexico and I have a theory..
.. as to why, possibly, the flu is hitting
Mexicans harder.

This could be the result of the history of
influenza in Mexico versus that of the USA.
Here I'm thinking that longterm exposure to
the disease would provide some sort of
immunity or more finely tuned immune response;
in terms of evolution, this would be approximate
to natural selection.

If Mexicans were allowed to sustain the full
brunt of the disease as it runs its complete
course, they will not be as susceptible to flu
the next time around... in my opinion.

5. This is a new virus. Nobody has immunity to it.
People in Mexico are getting it because it started there.

2. We do not live that far from Cleburne and I told my
husband this morning I would not be surprised if some of the other area schools (Joshua, Burleson, etc) have a few "probable" cases in the coming days.

I think that they might close McLean Elementary in Fort Worth because they have a student there with a "probable" case.

7. Comal County (New Braunfels) closes schools too.

For anyone not in Texas, this county is just north of San Antonio.
