Tuesday they were down... I wondered if it was a reaction to the flu issue - seemed odd that prices would drop after they'd doubled.
Anyway, I booked my flight for late June. Don't know what things will be like then.
I am probably one of the least likely people to catch this flu - I spend most of my time in my home/studio, venturing out every other week or so for groceries or supplies. I usually go to the store at odd ours (very early or very late) because I'm not good with driving when traffic is heavy (vestigial fear from a bad accident).
But, I was out today and went to the grocery store and a pharmacy. It was weird because I was SO aware of all the "community" surfaces we share in public places:
The pen to sign for a prescription, the keypad/stylus to pay by credit/debit card, the push bar or pull handle on the store entrance (if it isn't automatic), the grocery cart or basket...
The woman behind me in line coughed all over me and I debated with myself over whether it would be rude or not to politely say something given the constant warnings (I didn't say anything, but I bought that flipping hand sanitizer (that I really dislike) and used it...
I fly a LOT and end up spending a fair amount of time in airplanes, airports and (unfortunately) airport restrooms. If you wash your hands like a trouper and then handle a little dial or lever to release paper towels to dry your hands on, you've defeated your own cleanliness. I'm no germophobe - I've always had the view that we go overboard with that. You can't build up resistance/immunity if you sterilize your environment all the time. But we're dealing with a potential health risk and it helps to just be a little more aware and take responsibility (for ourselves as well as those around us) in public. Even if we weren't facing a possible pandemic of indeterminate danger thus far - we should take responsibility anyway. My guess is most of us do.
I'm comfortable with my own ability to take precautions I can control within reason, but it really irks me - given the media coverage of a probable health risk, especially (and until we know more) - that people who cough or sneeze can't or won't take measures to keep the spray contained. That's just infuriating, even if you're not anywhere near a plane... an uncovered sneeze could dangerously affect someone who's elderly or has a compromised immune system - even if you don't. It's wrong and it goes beyond rude. But this should be SOP regardless of this H1N1 virus.
It seems as though the media has created more of an emergency than is justified - maybe I'm wrong but it seems that way. I've read that there are less than 10 confirmed deaths from this flu in Mexico per the WHO, and the 150+ are unconfirmed or attributable to other complications. If the media is relaying facts, I just wish they were more accurate about things like this. Listening/watching the news nonstop doesn't automatically mean one is well-informed. Not unless the information being relayed is accurate (or corrected as necessary). Conflicting data just promotes more fear and panic.
