Specter must fight for his new Party if he is going to be a Democrat.
The NY Times states it well in their editorial below. If Senator Specter does not fight for the Democratic Party, he will be rejected outright. Democrats understand how cagey he can be. He has always talked a good game and then always votes the opposite way. He has never failed in that regard. If he thinks he can win only by supporting the new health-care reform, he may be whistling past the graveyard? He is going to have to prove himself or Democrats in PA will not vote for him.

<snip>
Democrats know well Senator Specter’s shifty middle-ground arts, particularly in shepherding such unvarnished Republican ideologues as Samuel Alito and Jay Bybee to the federal bench. But Mr. Specter switched to the Democratic caucus in good standing for daring to support the Obama stimulus plan, sensibly bucking Congressional Republicans’ deranged attempt to make a party issue of the failing economy’s threat to the nation.

In Senator Specter, the weighty Obama agenda will need more than a defecting opportunist. The senator must fight convincingly for the party he has grasped at for survival. He leaves the Republicans apparently clueless about the need for a new winning philosophy of politics larger than merely taking vengeance on some of their lesser zealots. Senator Specter fairly sneered at the core of right-wing triumphalists he left behind. “I was unwilling to subject my 29-year record in the United States Senate to the Pennsylvania Republican primary electorate,” he told President Obama.

1. Specter knows the "LOCKSTEP"
He was doing it all the time Bush was trashing the country. He might have spoken out against the Bushit a time or two, but his votes were what counted. He saw the writing on the wall in November of 2008. I don't think he's the only GOPer who has the urge to bail out on Mitch and Boner!

23% approval polls...ouch that's got to hurt!

3. I'VE BEEN SAYING THIS FOR YEARS!
Nearly every time Spectre opened his mouth, it was contradicted by his vote ...

2. I agree. And I hope PA has a nice progressive Democrat challenger in the wings
if only for the sake of keeping him honest.

4. We're pretty familiar here with Arlen Specter already, thanks.
I think we who actually live here can decide who we'll vote for and why.

You and the NYT are actually making Specter's point with your overemphasis on party loyalty. That's what the Republican party did, punished him last time because he dared to stray from the party line. Congrats! You have something in common with Republicans.

Democrats in PA will vote for Specter no matter if he continues to vote Republican? Tell us more.

6. I disagree with your facile take on what people in another state will do a year from now, yes.
It's shallow to pronounce from afar what another state's voters will do, and why. It's a very long year between now and the primary, with unknown things yet to happen. Yet the only factor you see operating is party loyalty.

Specter obviously doesn't always 'vote Republican' because if he did, the Republican party would have had no problem with him. Instead, they made no secret of working to defeat him. Your premise itself is faulty.

7. Am I to assume that your opinion is the majority opinion of your state?
Or just another opinion?

8. It's an informed opinion, a Pennsy voter's opinion. Unlike yours, kentuck.

9. You make it sound like PA voters are so different from voters in Ohio,
NY, KY, IL, and elsewhere? Why are Democrats in PA so different from other "states"? By the way, I was only expounding on the opinion in the NY Times. I don't feel like my "opinion" should be attacked as if it was from an alien world or another "state" so it could not possibly have any validity? Only you are from PA so only you are informed on PA voters?
