So because of the flu scare, the Today Show
is no longer going to visit our fair city.

And they were even going to interview some of our prominent drag queens.

In other news, we are getting more cruise ships.

1. Cruise ships themselves are scary! How many times have we read of everyone on a ship getting sick?
If one passenger on a ship has the flu then it could spread to everyone aboard. Then if passengers go ashore, Key West is toast.

5. We've had all kinds of stories on that.
This is the time of year we start getting a lot of European visitors and they're saying they won't come now.

I work at the airport, lol, but I'm not really worried about this flu thing.

I don't think I'd want to get on a cruise ship though.

7. Our family contracted the Norwalk virus on a Disney cruise.
Not just ours, but all of our extended family (grandparents and great-grandma). We were told to stay in our cabins for 2 out of the four days we had there, only given vouchers for return trips which we never used. To their credit the crew did bring pretty much everything we needed (clean linens, food, snacks and tons of games we got to keep) EXCEPT LYSOL. I kept begging them for Lysol so we could spray around the cabin but they never brought it. That seriously pissed me off. Later we discovered that since the sick had reached a certain threshold it was automatically reported to the CDC.

I'll probably never go an another cruise again--I know none of them do enough to clean appropriately in between cruises.

13. The Mexican cruise I was on last week....
they have hand sanitizers EVERYWHERE! They won't let you in a dining room unless you sanitize your hands right in front of them. All of that alcohol dried my hands all to hell, but I can see the advantage...

10. Me too, but I was naive back then. I was totally confused by the big mirror on the ceiling.
True story, I swear.

11. It's a fun town.
When I lived in Miami, I would drive down to the Keys at least twice a year. But now I live in the Atlanta area, so it's a bit too far to drive.

6. The media, I believe, is doing its best to cause panic
Just this morning on CBS Morning News one of the anchor babes asked VP Biden "as a mother with an infant why don't we shut down the border with Mexico?"!!!!

8. The flu has already crossed the border and has a strong foothold in SoCal and NYC.
Why on earth would someone think closing the border NOW would do any good?

12. We have it in Georgia now too.
A woman in LaGrange was in Cancun and tests now confirm she is infected.

14. It's here, and it's no different than another go-round of the regular flu, apparently.
Mortality appears quite low.

We still need to keep an eye on it - as a new virus it could change on us, and a second go-round of swine flu in the fall is possible, and when 1918 did that it was much worse.

I am cautiously optimistic that this was just a wake-up call for the public and a damned good dress rehearsal for public health agencies.

9. And that is hilarious in itself!
As if we could shut down that border!

On the Today Show, Biden said we shouln't get on airplanes.

That is going to go ever well in the industry.
