quotable...(on torture)
"History is pockmarked with the assertions of bright people who applied their intellect and reason to justify sinister acts in an effort to rationalize brutality: again and again, the laws of God and man have been perverted and leveraged to sanction rape, carnage, suicide, mass murder.

It's hardly a witch hunt to want to understand and avoid repeating fundamental mistakes. Torture is torture, and it's chilling to hear anyone rationalize it. These are the politics of fear, not freedom.

A jagged spire rises from the Kaiser Wilhelm church in Berlin, its mangle the result of a WWII air raid. It stands stark against the city's sleek architecture, as if to say "lest we forget." The church is one of many buildings in the region that silently serve to acknowledge, to it's own people and the rest of the world, crimes perpetrated against humanity by a few in the name of an entire nation.

Should we allow our fear and anger to justify barbaric behavior then the barbarians have already won."
