London's Daily Mail reports that many of the well known effects of aging, such as forgetting your car keys, an inability to remember an acquaintance's name or losing your train of thought, begin in our late 20s.

The study: Over a seven-year period, researchers at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, studied 2,000 men and women ages 18 to 60, all of whom were in reasonably good health and well educated. The volunteers were asked to solve visual puzzles, recall words and story details and spot patterns in letters and symbols. These are similar to the tests used to diagnose mental disabilities and declines, including dementia.

The results: For nine of the 12 tests administered, the average age for those performing at the top was 22, while on five of the tests, the first age at which performance was significantly lower was 27. Memory was shown to decline from the average age of 37. In the other tests, poorer results were shown by the age of 42, reports the Mail. But the first cognitive skills to go are reasoning, speed of thought and spatial visualization. Programs and therapies that are designed to prevent or reverse age-related conditions may need to start earlier, long before people retire, according to study leader Timothy Salthouse.

Many "real world" jobs are much less mentally stimulating than college classes. I am 31 and mentally don't feel at the top of my game, but I blame it on my job and less intellectual associates. If I would have gone to graduate school and were doing real reseach, I think that I would be doing better. I try to read and do other mentally stimulating things during my off hours, but I don't have a huge amount of time.

I bet it has more to do with the fact that 22 year olds have been in school more recently and so are used to using more of a variety of memory skills.

perhaps our brains start getting "fatigued"...from having to keep track of all the important things we have taken on?

By the time most of us reach late-twenty-dom, we have become "family-people", and have a lot more on our plates, than when we were only interested in ourselves and when the next party was :evilgrin:

i am now remembering all things for four people and their lives instead of just me. and so if on occassion i forget, which i hadnt in past, i am so kickin ass for all i am remembering. like where son left his shoes, coats, hat, football, and to take homework to school and note and coat and and and.

I used to get furious when my hateful mother in law would gush over the wonderful SON she had (even though he married ME!), for always remebering her birthday, and mother's day..and for getting her the perfect gifts..:)

He just knew her birthday was "sometime in October".. She died decades ago, and I still know that that nasty woman's birthday was October 8th:)

the only grace i have going with her is i treat her son so damn well (she cant deny) and am a kick ass mom to her grandsons, lol lol lol so she has to give me credit, even though i am a pos.

i have two sons, lordy, i hope i can stomach their choice so i dont have to be that. lol. she certainly is a lesson learned that my daughter in laws will benefit from.

I swore (and kept my promise twice so far) to NEVER comment on our boys' girlfriends & wives..

I am the PERFECT mother in law..:)

I stay out of their "business", and have only kind & supportive things to say to them and about them:)

how we feel in our mind is a whole lot of diference then our body aging. i thought this is what it was about

i am not. it is what it is..... doesnt mean i cant do it wonderfully

go figure. Im a vegan, maybe thats why.

and still over last couple years i have noticed shifts in the old body.

everything is going south..its like my body is heading back to the earth..ashes to ashes and all that..
but I think its a hoot...! and I lie and say Im 65 to get the senior discount..
I stoop over on purpose to get 10 percent off..
otherwise Im still feeling pretty nifty.

and that is all i am saying. i agree with all of you saying it is in spirit, mind, whatever. my kids are still young, so i am still in that place. it is a cool place to be as i age. but age i do see... and since i am just steppin foot in, i am curious about others feeling on it and approach to it. i too like to see the "hoot" in it.

I finally went to the doctor and found out that the reason my left foot was so swollen was because of a DVT. Its been down hill ever since.

it's how I assure myself that I'll never grow old...
