They are either going to have to swallow some crow and make nice with Romney, or they are going to have to be marginalized and isolated by Republicans who are supporting a Mormon that they cannot abide.

What will they ever tell their rightwing fundamentalists?

The big fundraising number $23 Million first quarter for Romney must be causing them severe heartburn.

If they need help making nice, they could concentrate on the fact that Romney has only been married once. If they intend on sinking his candidacy, they are going to have to do some opposition research on the Republican's leading fundraising candidate.

Or they could just become invisible, or keep promoting morally challenged Newt.

Any way they turn, their power is going to be diluted this time around.

2. They are going to have to compromise with any of the serious

contenders, or they risk losing their influence by seeming to obstruct the selection process and damage the candidates with their pronouncements. Pretty soon the base just isn't going to want to hear it, and will tune them out. Dobson has said already that he will not support McCain under any circumstances, and to me McCain has the least shit on him in terms of fundie-perspective immorality--one divorce, one remarriage, acceptable religion (Episcopal). I think it has to do with CFR.

3. It's not Dobson and Falwell that Romney has to worry about
If he actually gets the nomination, Falwell at least (Dobson is iffy) will throw his support behind him. It will be their followers that will be tough to convince to get out the vote because no matter how energetic Falwell/Dobson get, the base, having been fed a steady diet of Mormonism = Cult and not having a "true" religious conservative like Bushy this time around, will not be inspired to go to the polls.

5. I think you make an excellent point, and further....
It is the ability of the Dobsons and Falwells to 'turn out the voters at the polls' that is the bedrock of their power. Lose that and the Repubs Leaders won't give them the time of day.

I just do not see them being able to rehabilitate Newt into an acceptable candidate, nor change their colors enough to convince their flocks to elect a Mormon.

They are going to lose a significant chunk of their power this time, unless ..... a Repub candidate emerges from left field named JEB BUSH. He is the only one who could rally that base IMHO.

6. I don't even think Jeb could do it
A large number of conservatives are souring on the Bush family, and they know that most of the country hates the Bushes now and wouldn't vote for another.

I'm honestly surprised they're not pushing Sam Brownback of Kansas.

7. "They will not be inspired to go to the polls."
I appreciate and agree with your point, but I think the right will manage to come up with a wedge issue they all agree on to get fundies to the polls regardless.

4. What if Romney converts to Dobsonism? I think he's hungry enough to do that.
After all, precedent has been set with Lieberman. (Political parties, religions, they're all the same.)

8. Whatever.

I bet it would sound sort of like Coca Cola (the "fundamentalists" inc.) in its backchannel dealings with Pepsi (the "Republicans" inc.) as they consider how to incorporate and split up the spoils from some upstart soda pop ("Romney" inc.) Scams all around. BAU.

ON EDIT: Agreed with the poster above who says it's the following they have to worry about, not the corporate heads of these entities.
