Springsteen to Seeger...you "outlasted the bastards".
The Nation has this tonight from Katrina vanden Heuvel.

That must have been some birthday concert. Hoping there is good video of it.

Springsteen to Seeger: "You Outlasted the Bastards"

"You outlasted the bastards, man," Bruce Springsteen told the roaring crowd.

I think that was my favorite line at the rollicking birthday concert celebrating Pete Seeger's 90th! .

There were other uplifting, astonishing moments Sunday night at Madison Square Garden, at a five-hour concert which Seeger only ok'd because it raised much-needed funds for his beloved Clearwater project--a non profit organization which the oft-maligned bard started in 1969 to clean up his beloved, polluted Hudson River.

Fifteen thousand people, of all ages, (okay median age was probably 55) danced, clapped and sang along as Seeger did a soaring version of "Amazing Grace" and the saintly looking Joan Baez sang " Where have all The Flowers Gone."

Arlo Guthrie reminded us that Pete, like his father Woody, "believed in the power of the people singing songs to change the world." Richie Havens reminded us why "Freedom" is a great anthem for all times. Tim Robbins and his son, strumming the guitar, to "Michael, Row The Boat Ashore." Ruby Dee entranced with her enchanting reading of a poem (for peace) written by Pete's uncle before he joined the Foreign Legion. In between, a startlingly youthful Emmylou Harris recounted correspondence she had with Pete as a young folk singer; Tom Morello and Taj Mahal teamed up on "Waist Deep in the Big Muddy"), and John Mellencamp offered up "If I Had a Hammer." Congressman John Hall, once the lead singer for one of my favorite groups, "Orleans," joined in several rounds.

Toward the end of the five hour Seeger-apoza, Springsteen announced to the crowd, "Pete's gonna come out," and "He's gonna look like your granddad--if your granddad could kick your ass." If character and integrity keeps you youthful, and I believe it does. Seeger looked all of 25--of strong backbone and spirit and moxie and with keen eyes which are the stronger for having seen the best, and the worst, of our country's history.

They were referring most likely to the vilification of Pete Seeger by those involved in the communist witch hunts of earlier decades. Seeger was called before the infamous House Un-American Activities Committee

Here is part of his testimony.

Mr. SEEGER: I have sung for Americans of every political persuasion, and I am proud that I never refuse to sing to an audience, no matter what religion or color of their skin, or situation in life. I have sung in hobo jungles, and I have sung for the Rockefellers, and I am proud that I have never refused to sing for anybody. That is the only answer I can give along that line.

There is more of his testimony at the link. He told them it was "immoral" to ask such questions of American citizens. He was so right.

Good for him.

He was banished from the airwaves for many years during what should have been the best years of his career.

Here are two videos I posted today of his songs.

And a favorite that really annoyed the powers that be.

4. Pete and Bruce have become something of an odd couple . . .
they have a mutual admiration society going that's really quite unique and beautiful . . .

as a student of music history, Bruce has been an admirer of Pete's for many years . . . they really had a chance to get to know each other a few years back when both won Grammys for folk music recordings -- Pete for traditional, Bruce for contemporary . . . I remember being surprised and delighted when Pete got to introduce Bruce at the Grammy show and called him "my good friend Bruce Springsteen" . . . since then they've recorded several tracks together for various charity albums, and of course Bruce did a whole tour as a tribute to Pete that he called "The Seeger Sessions" . . . sold quite a few CDs, too . . .

over the past decade or so, they seem to have become great friends, which is really kind of strange when you think about how the music that Bruce is known for and the music that Pete is known for are so different . . . and how Pete has never been a fan of "electric" music . . . I recently read an article about the (then) upcoming 90th birthday concert in which Pete called Bruce (and I'm paraphrasing here) "the most wonderful man on the planet" . . . if you knew Pete, you'd know just how much of a compliment that really is . . .

having known Pete for 40 years and having been a Springsteen fan for almost as long, seeing them become such good friends really warms my heart . . . two great artists who approached music from different directions somehow met and came to not only appreciate each other, but actually develop a deep and sincere friendship that goes beyond music to the core of who they are as individuals . . . I still think the "odd couple" label applies -- but I absolutely love it! . . .

here's hoping that concert was recorded and will be out on DVD some time soon . . .

6. How the FBI went after folksingers
Interesting discussion of Seeger's problems with the FBI. His biographer had to go to court to get release of dozens of boxes of files.

You can listen for samples for free, cost to download. They go way way back to his early union days.

15. First concert I ever saw was Pete Seeger, when I was 5 yrs old with my mom and aunt
I thought his name was Pete Singer, (because his name was Pete and he was a singer). And the most recent concert I've seen was Bruce and the E Street Band, three weeks ago....Seeing them together in person would be just amazing...Wonderful to be reading about the close bond they've formed. Long live both of 'em.

21. I'm pretty lucky---with all the stories I see of DUers with right wing relatives/families,
I was born into one, that whatever their other dysfunctionalities, would see fit to take a 5 year old to see a blacklisted commie folksinger,(and in the mid-1950's) ...Bruce and the band, by the way, were in-freakin-credible...( Denver, April 10)...I think there's still some east coast shows left before they head to Europe ( just checked; just a few, until May 23rd)... If any of you reading this have a chance to go ,these old boys ( and girls) have still GOT IT.

19. A living cohort of Woody Guthrie
Which qualifies him for National Monument status. I loved his performance for President Obama and family at the pre-inaugural celebration at the Lincoln Memorial. He included Woody's 'forbidden' lyrics to "This Land Is Your Land" - about the 'no trespassing' sign and others. A rare treat from a rare treasure of American music.

22. Probably nothing out there video-wise
Because of succumbing to Huntington's chorea, Woody quit performing by the 1950's, at least publicly. After that, it was too difficult for him. There are recordings, but I suppose no one has uploaded them to YouTube with pics. Worth seeking out, just for the sheer historical weight.

Thanks for your OP! :hi:

23. It was a very long tragic illness.
I read somewhere that two of his daughters died from it as well as his mother.

This is the only place I have seen that.

The person singing that song...copyright 2004...who was that? Tom Flannery? Very sad song.

24. It's a wretched disease
In his autobiography "Bound For Glory", he details the decline of his mother, and at that time, it was diagnosed as a mental breakdown, since its true nature was unknown. I HIGHLY recommend the book for everyone, even if they do not know anything about Woody. It's a great place to start.
