Michael Savage Barred Entry to the UK
by Hexa
Share this on Twitter - Michael Savage Barred Entry to the UK Tue May 05, 2009 at 12:44:07 AM PDT

The British Home Office released a list this morning of 16 of the 22 people it has barred from entering the country since October 2008 to March this year. Officially, people get banned for 'fostering extremism or hatred' and the US talk radio host is one of them.
Meet me below the fold for the full list.

Hexa's diary :: ::
Michael Savage got himself put on the list for:

His views on immigration, Islam, rape and autism have caused great offence in America.
The list also includes Fred Waldron Phelps Snr, the preacher who has been picketing the funerals of AID's victims and soldiers, as well as his daughter, Shirley Phelps-Roper.

They have also barred two muslim clerics, a former KKK Grand Wizard, a Hamas MP, a Jewsh extreamist, two leaders of Russian skinhead gangs and a Neo-Nazi.

8. I tell ya, that's what would break MY heart the most.
She's not a hater, that's for sure. We're talking about a woman who threw the South into an uproar merely by touching Harry Belafonte on one of her TV specials in the sixties. Not to mention that when she sings "I Know a Place" for an audience of gay men, she changes the lyrics to "All around there are boys and boys."

Naah, she wouldn't have any truck with the Savage Weiner.

Give me "Don't Sleep in the Subway" over Savage's entire on-air career.

3. This is wonderful!
And no, his freedom of speech rights have not been violated, he hasn't been arrested for anything he spews.

This is so good though because it highlights the monstrous crap that the right spews in this country. Nothing but hate-mongers and another country wants nothing to do with Weiner for it.

15. Your rationalization doesn't work with me.
The solution to speech you don't like isn't to censor which is what the U.K. is doing. Putting fingers in your ears and going la la la won't make these opinions go away. You counter speech you don't like with more speech.

After all, free speech freedoms are for unpopular opinions. You cheer today, but it may be one of your opinions that may be illegal tomorrow.

It just goes to prove that liberals can be just as anti-freedom as their right-wing counterparts.

17. Guess what? We don't make the laws in the UK
Edited on Tue May-05-09 02:59 PM by get the red out
Talk to them maybe they will change their laws. I am just glad that they used the laws they have in their country to take a stand against hate. And Savage/Weiner has yet to be arrested for what he discusses on air. We have violated him in no way. The United States allows him to make a good living spewing hate. This country can uphold his free speech only within our borders.

This is similar to companies firing people for saying offensive things about the organization, they don't have the right to keep the job no matter what they say, they only have the right to not be in trouble with the laws of the United States of America. Many people shout free speech in these instances, but it doesn't stand up in a court. Savage isn't guaranteed the right to enter another country simply by virtue of him being a US citizen and our laws allowing his speech.

If it were a Muslim country not wanting to allow him entry, would that be different? Or would it then simply be simply be a matter of a country exerting its right to defend their culture and beliefs?

22. You have two separate issues here.
No one is abridging his free speech rights here in America. He is not a British subject. He does not broadcast in the U.K. The British government is simply telling him that his hate speech makes him an undesirable person, and as such cannot enter the U.K.

BTW, Great Britain does not guarantee the right to free speech.

Frankly, I think it's nice that someone recognizes hate speech for what it is and did something about it.

28. shouting fire in a movie theater
(assuming no fire of course) is not free speech, it's incitement to riot. Savage and ilk like to walk that line. Ther are sensible limits on everything, including the bill of rights. Might add like others that OP is re UK law, and that unlike say newspapers the public owns the airwaves. Have as wacky an opinion as you'd like, but don't try to wink at hate speech or not very subtle incitements to violence.

6. Good. We've got enough trouble with our own tabloid writers, without Savage
Savage seems to be REVOLTING. He is even worse than Melanie Phillips or Richard Littlejohn, and that's saying a lot.

I don't think Fred Phelps is likely to be that welcome in many countries, as he posts a lot of vile stuff about how they deserve whatever terrorist attacks/ natural disasters they've suffered, because of being soft on teh gays. He wrote that we deserved the July 2005 London bombings because we allow civil partnerships. Horrible man.

14. Great Britain doesn't have a 'first amendment'.
Maybe you should read the OP first. They are a sovereign nation that can ban all the foreigners they care to, for whatever reason.

Hate speech is one thing that will get you in trouble in GB.

Still flying under the radar, I see.

16. Of course they don't have a first amendment, never did.
I don't like the talk of the KKK, or Christian Identity, Westboro Baptist church, or any of the rest of haters. But we have the first amendment for a reason. Seems like there are lot of people who are pretty gleeful that free speech that they don't agree with is being stifled in GB. I'll bet they would gladly give up the second amendment here if it only was applied to people who disagree with them. Picking and choosing the constitution again.

Keeping tabs on me? Sorry, I have no interest in you. Find somebody else to date.

21. For the record, I am a strict First Amendment believer
and I would never want to ban the Savage Weiner or the Phelpses from being able to spew their hatred here, as revolting as I find it (their proper antidote is more speech).

However, I also respect the rights of other countries to say they don't want other countries' crap floating against their shores, if they so choose. It's their decision to make, not mine. I can't impose the First Amendment on Great Britain.

29. And 'first amendment' issues don't apply to non-citizens visiting the USA either
E.g., ask my Communist colleague about just how easy he found it to get a visa to visit the USA in the 1980s, first amendment or no first amendment!

23. This story made my day.
After seeing the real Weiner in action - the one who tried to shut down Take Back The Media by suing Symbolman, Mrs. Symbolman and myself for millions of dollars because we published his real name on our web site - I knew that for all the screeching he does about his First Amendment right to be a rage-aholic, he felt that the amendment applied only to him, and not to those who disagreed with him.

Comeuppance is sweet. That hateful SOB gets no sympathy from me. None.

35. He was interviewed on NPR yesterday
He was bloviating about his right to free speech, and that how others should "fight to the death for his right to speak offensively".

Next, the very first caller approximately said "If Savage's comments were directed towards Christians, Whites, or Conservatives instead of Muslims, then his show would be kicked off the air in about a day."

Savage got so pissed that he said the caller "was a nut wearing pajama's in some mental institution in Iowa." He pressured the Talk of the Nation host to kick the caller or he would hang up. Click ... Savage hung up.
