Conservative to lead GOP fight on court nomination

By BEN EVANS – 2 hours ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — The top Republican in the Senate served notice on President Barack Obama Tuesday that the GOP won't rubber stamp his choice to succeed the retiring Justice David Souter.

"The president is free to nominate whomever he likes," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said. "But picking judges based on his or her perceived sympathy for certain groups or individuals undermines the faith Americans have in our judicial system."

McConnell's Republicans are turning to a conservative Southerner as their point man on Obama's nominee, signaling that they won't shy away from a protracted fight despite risks of being cast as obstructionist.

3. "Picking judges based on perceived sympathy" -- isn't that what Republicans do?
And didn't they say, back when we went through this before, that to do anything other than rubber stamp Bush's choice is unpatriotic, unAmerican, and - yes - obstructionist?

Why, I remember the Republicans saying constantly that if the Dems even so much as filibustered, they were evil pieces of shit.

Of course, as soon as the Dems had the house, the Republicans filibustered something like 80+ times in the next two years.

"Shame", rabrrrrrr said to the Republicans, "is something that does not even come to close to sort of almost registering in your perception".

5. It'll be very interesting to see who Obama picks.

He's shown a capacity for planning a few moves in advance and letting the opposition paint themselves into a corner. I expect he's going to pick someone who is both qualified, and capable of putting obstructionists in the worst possible light. This is actually the biggest reason I expect him to choose a woman-- not because we need more females on the court, but because opposing a qualified female nominee will make Republicans look terrible and paint them once again as the "rich white males first" party.

7. Exactly Who Are They Leasing The Fight Against?
Because as far as I know a nominee hasn't been picked yet. They live in a world of self fulfilling fear and battle straw men that don't even exist. How many, I wonder, conversations and meetings have they had on a non-existent problem, at least at this point? No wonder their party is failing.

8. I'm actually considering writing McConnell over this
Particularly about Sessions. As someone from the south and, according to the DMV, a Kentucky resident, I found myself stereotyped as a racist more than a few times after I went away to college. In his new position, Sessions is going to be the chief voice of the opposition in what's sure to be a widely-covered nomination. Given his past record, the Republicans are saying racism is okay and everyone might as well stereotype southerners as bigots.

13. "Certain groups" here means gays.
That's why he stuck the "undermines the faith" thing in there. No less disgusting for it's predictability.

15. I'd say let them.
Something about a filibuster requiring 60 votes to override. The Democrats new how many republican votes? I can't really recall, but maybe one of you can refresh my memory....
