Student Commits Suicide at Canandaigua Academy
Canandaigua, N.Y. - Thomas Kane, 17, a student at Canandaigua Academy committed suicide just after 11 a.m. Tuesday. The Academy went into lockdown after the first reports of a suicide involving a gun.

Police interviewed his friends and other students in an effort to make sure no one else was involved.

According to a press conference, Kane used a modified shotgun and had 30 rounds of ammunition on him and in his locker.

Two Molotov cocktails were also found in his locker.

Superintendent Raw said he is not sure whether they will have a "normal" school day Wednesday.

So sad to see. Such a broad range of emotions involved here.

1. Molotov cocktails and 30 rounds are more than a simple suicide.
Not that any suicide is simple.

Something else was going on in this kid's life.

4. I'm not sure how to say this...
This is awful, but thank goodness he apparently changed his mind and decided not to take others with him. With so many murder-suicides in the news lately it's--well, not good, of course, but a relief--to see that someone didn't feel the need to take any other innocent lives with him.

Of course, that innate decency makes his suicide even sadder. I don't want to interpret his entire personality on the basis of this final decision, but I suspect that he was a good person... angry and unhappy enough to consider hurting others, but in the end not able to do it. RIP, Thomas.

6. Still shook up about this
I am a Canandaigua Academy alumni. So sad and tragic for this student's family and friends, all the students and faculty, and the whole community. Thank heaven it didn't get even worse.
