RE: The "Corporate Media"
How do you reconcile your view that the media are corporate, hence conservative, when MSNBC (owned by NBC Universal) is explicitly hiring anchors and producing program that caters to a more liberal audience?

1. They also give 15 hours a week to Joe S and have more conservative

than liberal guests on the show. (Studies have been posted on this forum with this finding.) They're heavily conservative in the AM and their guests are heavily conservative in the PM but the anchors are liberal in the PM.

2. Corporations are about profits
MSNBC has discovered there's money to be made with liberal programming.

Corporatism is not the same a conservatism. The two groups simply share the desire to keep as much money as they can.

6. I watch MSNBC from 8 - 10 every night.
If there's a good show on another network during that time, I record it. I also watch the first half of The Ed Show. It's pretty good.

7. I have an addiction to 24/7 news
When I had the basic satellite package, I would keep the teevee tuned to CNN most of the day. I gave up teevee and the satellite almost two years ago. Good thing since CNN has taken a turn towards the right.

Now, I get my news fix on the Internet. Most of the time, I stream MSNBC, via various online sources. When I can't get MSNBC, I'll opt for the CNN stream.

I've turned into my parents. They kept their teevee on CNN most of the day.

3. When they are doing what should be considered "straight news"
i.e. No anchor, or explicitly expressed point of view, they use right wing frames and labels to characterize issues.

An example, using the term "activist judges" as if it is something other that a RW term for a judge that does something that the RW doesn't like. The newsreaders continually use it as if it were a legitimate, neutral term.

4. Because NBC news isn't informative to its general population.
If a particular show is considered liberal, the people will not take it serious, even if they cover the truth.

8. What TYPE of programs?
Edited on Wed May-06-09 09:35 AM by JHB
I'll echo blogslut's two main points:

1) Those hires and production is being done because the execs smell profit (more audience in preferred demographics) and
2) "Corporate" and "conservative" may overlap in many areas, but they're not the same.

and go further:

Look at the type of shows you are talking about: half-hour political chat shows on a cable outlet that are marketed as being from a liberal perspective. They're not very likely by themselves to change the political dialogue in this country enough to impact NBC Universal (nor it's owner, GE). And even if they do, all they need to do is recall Phil Donahue's show to know what can happen: Donahue's MSNBC show was top-rated in its slot but was axed anyway due to his coverage arguing against the as-yet-unlaunched Iraq war (which stood to be much more profitable to military contractor GE than Phil's dinky show).

And those are all political-chat shows. You don't see, for instance, a labor show giving consistent reports on labor issues (union and otherwise).
