40. Perhaps they need the money.. Lots of "rich" people these days are not-so rich anymore
They've got one in college, and her medical expenses are probably not that cheap either..He hasn't had a "real job" since he left the senate in '04..Maybe a one-termer like him has medical insurance through the senate when he leaves, but maybe not.. Self insuring cannot be cheap (available?) for someone with cancer..

He's not still practicing law, and with a microscope on his finances these days, maybe they need the money from another book..(can;t really see that many people interested enough to buy that many of the "new book"..

Maybe John-boy needs to write a book.."Why I Cheated"..

Like this "Doomsday Strategy" thing.

But I doubt Larry King would be the one. He'll just let her go on fruitlessly trying to rehabilitate her husband's reputation.

12. Yeah, this is quite a development in the story
I hope we hear more about it. Bless and keep these campaign staffers, whoever they are. At least they had some common sense and weren't afraid to go big. I was thinking maybe they told him their intentions and that was enough. But yes, I'd say the affair. The time frame mentioned seems to be just after the National Enquirer published that the pregnant mistress was living in Chapel Hill.

13. My advice to Elizabeth...
Go home. People know about your book. It doesn't need more publicity.

Go home and talk to John if you wish to try and work out this problem in your marriage. You are not the first person this has happened to and you will not be the last.

Learn to forgive if you want to make your marriage work again. It may be even stronger than before. It is up to you and John. It is not up to the public to decide what either of you do with your lives.

17. She knows what she's doing
She knows there is a good chance she'll be gone in a few years and she wants to make sure when that happens. John Edwards doesn't try to do a phoenix routine.

1) It would be bad for her children to have to relive this in 8 or so years.
2) She learned something about him, that in her mind makes him unfit for office.

14. I won't watch
She supported John for president knowing that if the news went public before Election Day, we could have lost the election to McCain.

Their personal life and troubles shouldn't be public knowledge and affect an election. But the reality is that those personal issues do weigh heavily with the public. Now she writes a book and brings it all back under a spotlight? Enough, Elizabeth. Be well, but enough is enough.

15. This is Elizabeth's revenge on John
I understand why she's doing this.

John's only 56. Relatively young for politics. He could try to lay low and make a political recovery in 8 years or so. Another Senate run or a shot at the Governor's mansion. She might not be around at that time given her condition.

As a lawyer, he's fine and will be able to make a living and support their children, I believe for doing this to the family however, she wants to ensure he has no chance of ever having a public life again. Putting the book out there on what an asshole he was seals the deal on that and will additionally provide finances to protect her children.

when you aren't slowly dying of cancer and you have a 10 year and an 8 year old.

She's probably going to die before those kids reach college age. I think she's just trying to maintain a home for the younger children while she can.

He could conceivably mount a comeback. Stranger things have happened.

22. 1) She participated in deceiving those who trusted. 2)She's blaming the woman.
I only heard the snippets of the Oprah interview regarding these two topics.

Regarding 1), she said she still believed in him as a candidate and didn't want to deprive the people of having him in the mix of choices. Hmmm. Not much there.

She herself brought up #2: She said (paraphrasing), "When there's something good out there, it means 'somebody' has WORKED at it to make it good, to BUILD it. It's not there for SOMEBODY ELSE to come around and TAKE it! You're supposed to build YOUR OWN good thing!1"

That was really crappy in absolving him of responsibility.

What's really icky is that this is the Kathy Lee, Frank GIFFORD scenario. I believe that once the trust has been breached, it is IRREVOCABLY breached. Going through the paces of "counseling" and rebuilding what WAS and IS NOT just will NOT erase the suspicion in both their minds that the TRUTH in his mind really is: "You are just not HOT enough for my sexual urges any more." Instead, there will follow Kathy Lee never letting him go and GIFFORD going to his grave with a lie.

About 25%. She knew he was married and she pursued a married man. Its disgusting behavior. That woman disgusts me as much as John.

75% of the blame is on John though.

29. I've never been married,
However I was briefly engaged.

When my ex cheated on me, you are right the trust in the relationship is gone.

I tried to find a way to make it work, however, it was impossible. I did not trust her, her motives, or anything she had to say anymore.

I blamed the guy the day I found out, and frankly speaking, I would never sleep with a married or engaged, or any women in any kind of committed relationship. After that, I blamed her. Its sad, she was one of my favorite people I had ever met till she did that.

I wish she would have just left me. At least I could still look back at her in a positive light.

Some relationships can be "saved." Some can't.

Once this is done, however, the relationship will never be what it was before it happened.

I think you're right: "...the TRUTH in his mind really is: "You are just not HOT enough for my sexual urges any more." I watched his behavior during the 2004 campaign and the body language he had screamed, "It's all about me" and "wow, I'm so hot!" Arrogance flooded the stage with his persona. Very shallow man when "sexual urges" rule your behavior. It's more about his arrogance though, I think.

39. Knowing what the world knows now, this could not possibly be
his first affair.

If he would risk his entire career on an ordinary blond like that, he must be a big time player.

I have to agree that as much as I like Elizabeth Edwards, she needs to review her options...

1. Give her total devotion to her health and her beautiful children

2. Admit that she knew all along that he is a player and has never been faithful.

3. Take every dime from him and the profits from the book and get on with her life.

My father always told me that "You can not make chicken salad out of Chicken ---- and she needs to face that fact.

She needs to let the door hit John Edwards and the whores he has played with ~

Say Bye Bye John and split.

she probably knows but can't admit that the child is his so Edwards will be tied to Hunter in some way forever now.

but she can make sure it only goes as far as support for the kid and nothing more.

by doing what she is she is making it so Edwards can never be with Rielle Hunter without people thinking even worse of him.

55. It seems like people are so condeming of John Edwards
on this thread. As if you sign your life away when you get married. What if she stopped loving him a long time ago, but he stay married to her because she was sick. What if she really dislikes him, but won't let him go. That is not good for the children either. And marriage should be something that is love between 2 people, not something for the sake of society. He didn't give away his soul when he married her.

I don't judge anyone for staying married even in infidelity situations or illness situations or children situations. I don't ever care who adults have sex with, either. I don't particularly want to watch the whole world groveling in it, though.

But the public life of politicians and their campaign operations, in this case, the political coverup and scam on the voters, the willingness to put the party and nation at risk, that's my business.
