The chief executive of Wal-Mart, Mike Duke, signed a petition calling for the prohibition of same sex couples adopting in Arkansas, the company has confirmed.

First reported Apr. 30 as a signature on a petition that matched CEO Mike Duke’s address, the company confirmed that Duke had signed in a little-noticed statement late last week.

“I can confirm that Mr. Duke did sign the petition,” Wal-Mart said in a statement. “Also, Wal-Mart did not take a position on the ballot initiative.”

Arkansas voted to ban anyone “co-habitating outside of a valid marriage” from adopting children or becoming foster parents last November. Critics say it targets gay couples in particular, though it doesn’t specifically say “gay,” “lesbian” or “same-sex.”
