The photos are a cautionary warning about abuses which can happen during wartime.

This is why they need to be released. So that Americans can see how prisoners were abused and tortured and they can tell their children, 'this was wrong - if you are ever in war, don't do this no matter what.' And for those who are currently serving, if they see this kind of shit going on, they can try to do something to stop it.

they can be used as a classic depiction of conservative values in action. I have no opinion on their release one way or the other but I find it telling that conservatives wouldn't want to spread them from sea to shining sea and brag about their content.
