2. The one disappointing thing about living in Vermont
is how rarely I need to write my elected representatives to get them to support a bill, because, usually, they're the ones who wrote it.

It is, especially, a rare day indeed when I disagree with Bernie.

what a waste! Paul Wellstone, Bernie Sanders and kinda/sorta Russ Fiengold. Where have they all gone??

Democrats aren't doing much for me these days, but what is the alternative??? I really HATE having to choose between the lesser of two evils!!!

I don't have much to complain about with people like Kennedy, Kerry, Frank, etc. :)

17. I complain about Barney
He's still a good guy, but he gets on the wrong side of issues often enough. Don't even get me started on Rep Olver... sometimes he's good, sometimes him (and his staffers too) can be wicked rude. Never known them to listen to me.

Gotta admit though, Kerry's staff rocks... real nice folk. They LISTEN.

18. I agree with Barney usually, but even when I don't I love the guy.
The guy wears his beliefs on his sleeve, and I like that in a person. Agree or disagree, one always knows where they stand with him. Not to mention his campaign ad where he stated, "I'm Barney Frank and I approve of this ad. Who else would?" There's pretty much no way I can't love the guy.

Kerry's staff is fantastic. Considering how many people they must have to deal with, to be as nice as they are is great. And yes, they do listen, unlike some who you can tell are probably polishing their nails as they speak to you. You can almost hear the "yeah yeah" going through their brain.

26. Barney: Wrong on civil rights of people with disabilities living in institutions
He actually authored a bill that would limit class-action lawsuits against institutions for the developmentally disabled.

http://www.libertyresources.org/cgi-bin/fullArticle.cgi?articleId=104

On March 3, Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) reintroduced a bill
(H.R. 1255) that would limit the ability of protection and advocacy
systems to protect individuals with developmental disabilities in
institutions. The bill was introduced and referred to the Judiciary
Committee. The Voice of the Retarded (VOR), a parent group strongly
supporting this legislation, is making a strong push to get cosponsors
for the legislation. We need to help educate members of Congress about
the true nature of this bill and urge other members of Congress to NOT
co-sponsor or in any way support this bill....

HR 1255 breaks new and dangerous ground by allowing class representatives
to opt out of cases seeking injunctive relief. For example, an
individual whose guardian opts them out of a class action seeking to
end the use of harmful restraints and seclusion could be denied the
benefit of banning these harmful techniques if the class action is
successful.

It is essential that Protection and Advocacy
systems continue to have the broadest authority possible to ensure the
protection of the rights of people with disabilities to be free from
abuse and neglect and fulfillment of their desire to live in the
community. Current Federal Rules of Civil Procedure already provide
class members with a number of protections including appropriate
notice, class certification requirements, the right to intervene, and a
fairness hearing on the final outcome. This legislation is not needed.

Finally, society, the courts, and the Congress have been moving away from
institutionalizing individuals with developmental disabilities to
creating supports and services to allow these individuals to live full
and productive lives in the community. This bill not only does not
support community living, but also restricts the rights of individuals
with developmental disabilities by allowing those that would prefer to
speak on behalf of individuals with developmental disabilities to have
the final say, even if different than the individual's own desires.

Bad Barney! No chowder!! :grr:

41. Who's John Kerry?
There are very few "establishment Democrats" I can stomach anymore. In the Senate, Max Baucus tops the list, with the "New Democrat Coalition of Landrieu, Bayh, the Nelson twins, and their ilk in a tie for second.

Sanders isn't eclipsing every Democratic Senator, just most of them, including my two finance lobbying targets, Schumer and Gillibrand.

You know the GOP is in bad shape when half of the Republican Senators are Democrats! But what does it say about our party?

We need to mobilize for real change!
