WASHINGTON - The Phillies were honored by President Barack Obama at the White House today for their 2008 World Series victory.
"We share something in common because no one thought I was going to win either," Obama said during a Rose Garden reception.
Obama noted that Phillies fans had waited 28 years since the team won the World Series in 1980, saying "This is a victory for young folks, but also for the young at heart."
The Phillies were originally scheduled to meet the president on April 14, but the event was postponed because broadcaster Harry Kalas died the day before.
