CIA Briefing Document Lists Goss As Congressman -- Even Though He Was CIA Director At The Time

Another day, another indication that the CIA briefings document that Republicans are currently trying to bludgeon Nancy Pelosi with is deeply flawed and unreliable.

The Associated Press yesterday spotted two clear new errors in the document -- including one real howler we're kicking ourselves for not spotting ourselves:

1)

The CIA chart states that a Senate staffer, Chris Mellon, attended a briefing on July 15, 2004. However, Mellon told The Associated Press that he left the Senate in April 2004 and did not attend the briefing.

On Wednesday, CIA spokesman George Little said the CIA has reviewed its record and agrees that Mellon was erroneously listed as having attended the 2004 briefing.

And even more embarrassingly, 2)

The CIA chart also shows former House Intelligence Committee Chairman Porter Goss attended a March 8, 2005, briefing as a member of Congress. However, Goss was at that time the director of the CIA. He took that job in November 2004.

These are hardly the first pieces of evidence that the document is unreliable. Four Democratic lawmakers, including Pelosi, are now on record differing with the document's version of what happened. And as Greg Sargent reports today, Goss himself, who attended that 2002 Pelosi briefing is refusing to say that the CIA informed him and Pelosi that waterboarding had already been used -- the key issue in dispute.

In addition, as we reported earlier this week, the document refers frequently to "enhanced interrogation techniques" or EITs, as a subject of discussion, even though, as we reported earlier this week, that appears not to have come into widespread public use until 2004.

I noticed in a piece BabSis just posted he's still only identified as a "former GOP Congressman," even though he was the freakin' director of the freakin' CIA. Hmmm...

Even former Intelligence Committee member Graham says the CIA Memo's are not accurate according to his "documented" memory. Remember he's the one who writes down what he eats three times a day. Folks thought he couldn't run for President because he was so weird taking all those detailed notes of his daily activities.

Somethings up with these Memo Releases by CIA.. Sounds like warring factions amongst the "spooks." :eyes:

Thanks for the heads up on the TPM report, KoKo. Weird how these government servants lie so much, they can't keep their stories straight, even when the whole show is riding on it. That is, unless, of course, it doesn't matter if a lie or truth or misinformation or disinformation or whatever the heck comes out because they OWN the media and the American people will only "remember" what they want us to "remember."

There are too many examples of stories -- the truth -- We the People should know, but do not have the proper "clearance." For instance, CIA's efforts to rub out Castro and whoever else got in their way and Porter Goss's role in all what LBJ called "a damned Murder Inc in the Caribbean."

in releasing that memo with Goss listed as Congressman rather than him being the CIA Director at the time. Does it say there's dissention in the CIA...some folks in there trying to get some truth out about whether all Congress critters were fully briefed...or only selective ones. Plus Pelosi's push back calling the CIA liars. That was "bring it on" which isn't typical of Pelosi's behavior in the past.

After Cheney's speech MSNBC had a "former CIA operative" who said:

"Cheney cloaked himself in the Flag in that speech while the Constitution lies tattered at his feet."

The CIA guy seemed as pissed by Cheney's speech as Larry O'Donnell who looked like he was ready to take a fist to Cheney. Interesting things going on. I don't think media should have shown that speech in full by Cheney uninterrupted..but perhaps something is going on behind the scenes that's more important than my initial anger about giving Cheney that open forum. My initial reaction was "Shadow Govt." striking back, but on second thought, maybe more there's more to it than that explantion. :shrug:
