I'm not sure which is worse: having my livlihood and profession gutted by the NeoLibertarians of the Republican controlled Arizona Legislature or being bashed regularyly on DU by those who know nothing about education but think they do because they went to school.

Unfortunatly, Costco hasn't had peach pies in a long time. The good news is the fresh peaches will be available soon and that will make everything peachy-keen.

5 more days of school, then surgery to repair a torn meniscus.

I am trying to get back into teaching after a 10 year self-imposed exile, but my timing is awful. As you probably know, California is quickly heading into the crapper, and since the recent budget failure at the ballot box, 5 billion more dollars will be cut from education here. I wil try subbing in the meantime, but even then districts aren't eager to hire.

I wanted to get back because I missed it (long story, but at the time, I could not add to my school debt by getting the upper-level credits needed to stay certificated in WA state), and all I would need here is to pass a few tests and take 15 credits at any level every 5 years - plus, all my debt is gone. I also think my life experiences of the past 10 years would make me a better teacher than I was fresh out of college.

So! Who the hell knows?

I not only sympathize with you on the teacher bashing around here, but I get it with the regional bashing too. My heritage is from the wrong part of the continent, apparently. Damn me to hell! LOL

I think the situation is pretty grim right now and won't change until it gets much worse, bad enough for parents who elect the neoLibertarians to vote them out. I don't think they'll realize it in Arizona in time for the next election cycle so we're stuck with the decline until '12. The schools might be able to make the cuts more visible -- we've raised fees considerably and that's a start. Cutting supplies is another way. I hate the thought of requiring kids to bring in boxes of kleenex and rolls of paper towels to fill our supply closets but it may come to that. It seems so petty but it does send the message home.

One thing that may work in your favor is the number of teachers who've had it. I don't see a groundswell of resignations, yet, but anticipate that might be coming. Of course, these people would need jobs to go to and there aren't many of those around either. You might need to start at a charter school. Non union so no protection from arbitrary firings and crappy bosses (down side) but there are some pretty creative and well run charters around. Subbing sucks but at least it's income.
