"Central Asia is bordered by Russia, China, Iran and Afghanistan. Due to its substantial oil and gas reserves, it is a region of considerable geopolitical and strategic interest to the United States. With a total population of 55 million, and dozens of ethnic groups, the five new nations of the region are addressing a range of challenges, including the aftermath of a civil war, threats of religious extremism, ethnic rivalries, and the lack of strong democratic institutions."
