Poll question: Do you lock your doors at night? (spun off comments on gun poll)
Edited on Tue Apr-03-07 08:56 PM by uppityperson
I have been watching the "do you own gun" poll and some of the responses got me thinking about 1 reason some people have given to have a gun, personal safety (I hope I put in enough qualifiers since there are many reasons given by many and I don't want to get into that debate here). So, going on with the personal safety issue, I am curious, do you lock your doors at night or during the day or both or neither (when you are home, personal safety)?

Since there are several possibilities and combinations, please look carefully before voting. Thank you.

Edited to add, sorry, I forgot to put in about this meaning when you are home. Forget about considering if you are gone, as some might lock up then. Figure this only when you are home and sorry to the 5 who voted so far.

1. Don't you mean the myth of personal safety?
On account of homes with guns are more dangerous than those without guns.

6. Now, now, now, take that kind of talk here....

No one will always be safe, no matter how hard they try, there just might be a boogeyman person there waiting. At 1 point I hated taking showers (thank you Psycho). Someday we will all die.

20. Lyrics from Shatner (yes, William)
You'll Have Time
(William Shatner/Ben Folds)

Live life
Live life like you're gonna die
Becasue you're gonna
I hate to be the bearer of bad news
But you're gonna die

Maybe not today or even next year
But before you know it you'll be saying
"Is this all there was?
What was all the fuss?
Why did I bother?"

Now, maybe you won't suffer maybe it's quick
But you'll have time to think
Why did I waste it?
Why didn't I taste it?
You'll have time
Because you're gonna die.

Yes it's gonna happen because it's happened to a lot of people I know
My mother, my father, my loves
The president, the kings and the pope
They all had hope

And they muttered just before they went
Maybe, I won't let go
Live life like you're gonna die
Because you are

Maybe you won't suffer maybe it's quick
But you'll have time to think
Why did I waste it?
Why didn't I taste it?
You'll have time
'Cause you're gonna die

I tell you who else left us
Passed on down to heaven no longer with us
Johnny Cash, JFK, that guy in the Stones
Lou Gehrig, Einstein, and Joey Ramone
Have I convinced you?
Do you read my lips?
This may come as news but it's time
You're gonna die
You're gonna die

By the time you hear this I may well be dead
And you my friend might be next
'Cause we're all gonna die

Yeah, oh maybe you won't suffer and maybe it's quick
But you'll have time to think
Why did I waste it?
Why didn't I taste it?
You'll have time
You'll have time cause you're gonna die
Yes, you're gonna die
You're gonna die, I tell you
You're gonna die
You are gonna die

'Cause maybe you won't suffer maybe it's quick
But you have time to think
Why did I waste it?
Why didn't I taste it?
You'll have time 'cause you're gonna die

Live Life
Life life like you're gonna die
Because you're going to
Oh yes
I hate to be the beater of bad news
But you're gonna die

Maybe not today or even next year
But before you know it you'll be saying
"Is this all there was?
What was all the fuss?
Why did I bother?
Why did I waste it?
Why didn't I taste it?"
You'll have time, baby
You'll have time
'Cause you're gonna die
You are gonna die
Oh yeah

27. Actually it is very good. Odd, but very good.
Not like his "proud mary" days, but his poetry, along with good music. UPJr played it for me and when I finally figured out who it was, I was amazed. I esp liked this song.

18. hell, I still don't like taking showers for that reason
When I'm in the shower
I'm afraid to wash my hair.
I might open my eyes
and find someone standing there...

3. All the time.
I wouldn't have any stuff left if I didn't. I would probably be dead too. Someone climbed up to my balcony at 4:30am one night. Luckily, I had just woke up and I called the police. I have a security system now.

4. Hmmm, the key.... Where the heck is that thing?
I have no idea where the house key is. Wife may have one. I think I locked this place once in the past 2 years when I was going to the Bay Area for a few days. Beyond that, I never lock the place.

5. In good weather, I leave my doors open day and night.
And now that my property is deer-proof, things are pretty cool.

Before the deer-proofing, we had some pretty exciting events.

7. I keep my front door locked all the time, because it won't stay
shut without being locked (gonna have to fix that one of these days). I only lock my back door when I leave the house. I live alone in a small city and I don't own a gun.

11. I didn't tell UP Jr "don't talk to strangers" as this is total crap
Of course you talk to strangers, all the time. OK, for a toddler I can see it, but once he reached even 4 he needed to be able to talk with strangers if he was in trouble. He DIDN'T need to go anywhere with them or tell them personal information or let them touch him or any of that. What child hasn't talked with someone they didn't know before they talked with them? What adult hasn't.

We had a talk about never GOING with anyone without asking, stranger or not. This paid off. Jr introduced me to a total stranger at a campground once, wanting to know if could go for a ride with him since they had said "hi" and that made him not a stranger anymore.

fear fear fear fear fear boo

9. For me city and towns are completely different settings
I always lock the door in the city, but when I was living in a safe neighborhood in the suburbs, I left it unlock unless I was gone overnight.

10. Why wouldnt you lock day and night?
I mean even though I feel safe in my rural area, not locking the door just seems silly. Even the screen door gets locked. Its kinda like asking who leaves their wallet on their dashboard in their car when they park?

12. We don't even have keys to lock the doors if we wanted to.
We even go on vacation and leave the doors open. Never had a break in...knock on wood!

14. Lock day and night, in suburb
Had an attempted break-in last time about a year and a half ago. It's so easy to do, doesn't cost you anything, I'm not sure why you wouldn't.

19. We live in a semi-rural area (lakeside community) and rarely even close the doors
and lock them almost never, unless we're going away for a day or more. There isn't much crime out here aside from the occasional petty theft from the few inbred teens who prowl around looking for an easy score but they don't mess with us because we have 3 large dogs and 20+ large guns. Lotta large goin' on around here. :D

21. i live
in a town of 100k, near 200k during the winter months. when the weather is good, the doors and windows stay open because when it's hot (4 months +100 temps), the AC is running. My guns stay locked up unless they're going with me to the range, but it's a comfort knowing the neighbor is a deputy sheriff and keeps his cruiser in his driveway when he's not on duty.

23. Special Circumstance Here
My sailboat has hatchboards not doors, which only lock from the outside with a padlock.

As the boat is now on a trailer, these hatchboards are currently 12 feet above ground level, up a ladder.

But, yes.. I sleep with a 40 caliber carbine, loaded magazine in, but no round in the chamber.

but they're pretty much open during the day. I refuse to live in fear, and besides, locks only keep honest people out.

29. One night my husband came home and the door front door was locked, he knows I never lock the balcony
door (it is always open) so he climbed a ladder came into the bedroom and went to bed. In the morning I asked him why there was a ladder leaning up against the balcony and he said he had forgotten his key at work and that anyone could have gotten in bed with me and I would not have noticed. It was kind of a creepy feeling and usually I lie awake for hours at night and wake easily so now I put the lock on the screen, I have to have fresh when I am sleeping the colder the better even in the winter.
